This is Sakima. He lays on my throat while I'm sleeping, trying to kill me. But every morning I wake up because he's not successful. This is the look he gives when he's planning my death. I just hope he realizes that it's MY hand that connects to his food bowl.

I have a kitten in the house this year... that usually means at some point I will get the "kitten in the tree" picture. At least he can't destroy my tree skirt, the other two took care of that last year.

This is Emerald. She was a victim of animal cruelty, kept in a cage by her previous owner for her first year of life, confiscated and found covered in diarrhea, had open wounds, all of her teeth were broken and she had an intestinal bacteria infection. She was then kept in a cage as evidence during the court case, which almost took one year to the day. When released she was as if feral, very unfriendly, not able to be adopted. Slated to be put to sleep, she was saved by a rescue foundation and I took her in as a foster to try to get her to be more used to humans.

So far I've had her about six weeks or so. I will never give her up. This is her forever home.

The broken teeth are very serious. Did some of the teeth ned to be pulled?

God bless you and your willingness to provide a decent home for Emerald.

Thank you for the kind words everyone, I just could not see her being put down. I believe she was kept as a breeder - there was no way that she was kept as a pet. I don't think she's ever had kittens although when she was confiscated there were 15 other cats and some kittens too. The kittens died upon rescue. The other cats I have no idea what happened to them.

The doctor at the shelter (who held her for a year) fixed the canines and I think he pulled the remnants of the back teeth. Her medical records say they were fixed but the back teeth are missing.

To top it off, she was so scared of humans that they could not give her medicine for the infection so they put it in her food. She refused to eat the food so she never got her full dosage. When I got her she was five pounds. Five pounds for a two year old cat. Since I've had her, the vet that worked with the rescue was able to at least put her out for examination and spay.

As of today, I can pet her somewhat and have only been able to pick her up twice.

Our cat Amigo had a broken K9 tooth that had to be pulled. That was not inexpensive. The recptionest, SP, actually tried to talk us into a root canal at twice the price. She said it would perserve Amigo's smile. I say it added character to him. ;)

What gets me angry is how does a one year old cat (at the time of being taken away) have all broken teeth? Someone must have poked her with a metal bar or something, causing her to try to defend herself, which is probably why she is so terrified of humans.

Some say she was probably trying to bite her way out of the cage but her back teeth?? Doesn't make sense.

This is part of the report after she was confiscated.

The picture below is the day that I took her home. I had to use the towel to sneak up and cover her so I can get her out of the carrier. Her eyes show fear and doubt but this is the first time in her two year life that she is out of a cage to be allowed to run loose. Forever.

For Amigo, my son found part of the tooth in the cat tree. I saw pulp in the remaining part of the tooth and did some research on line. Basically to do nothing would lead to the death of Amigo due to the infections that would happen.

In jest I sometimes say Amigo should be glad we love him.

He does have a small snarl most of the time due to the missing tooth. That adds character to him. Along with the broken tail that happened when he was a kitten, before we rescued him.

Amigo is the best pet I have ever had. I doubt I will ever be the keeper of a dog again and I love dogs as well.

How did his tooth get broken? And how would a root canal preserve his smile?

We suspect that he caught the tooth in the cat tree fibers or he just bit into something wrong. The root canal would have saved the remaining part of the tooth, just like with us humans, and the space in his jaw would have a tooth. A root canal is recommended if Amigo was an outside cat. Since he is an inside cat we had the tooth pulled. It does not seem to bother him at all.

BTW this is a very nice cat tree due to the increased height of the tree. It allows Amigo a full streach when cleaning his claws on the sisal rope.

    http://www.amazon.com/Sisal-Scratch...=1353678602&sr=1-8&keywords=Molly+and+Friends

When our son was younger the rule of the house was if Amigo is in his cat tree then it is hands off because he was in his space. My son is now 13 and Amigo is 8. The rule was to protect Amigo from the love of a young boy. Amigo is our sons pet. He always wanted a cat and we waited ubtil he started school.

I need to get a cat tree, I've never thought of full stretch, though. That's a good point! I've got four rescue cats so I need one that has a few perches.

So I'm assuming that Amigo is your son's best friend? Isn't that the best thing ever? Teaches the kids appreciation, compassion and respect for a life that is not human.
