Scuff panel removal

I just purchased a set of door sill protectors for my double cab. Question is, how do I remove the scuff panels so that I can position the protectors? Do they just pop off? I pulled and pryed but finally gave up because I was affraid I might break them. The sill installation instructions mention a pry tool (complete with a Toyota P/N) but I don't know what it is. Wonder if a stout putty knife might work? Anybody have a clue??? In case you're wondering, this is what I'm trying to install

I was going to get some of those, let us know when you figure it out to make it easier on all of us.

 

i thought a putty knife would do let me know if i was wrong.

I got this diagram from the accessory trailer hitch wiring (

08921-04960) harness yesterday. Tomorrow I will also be attempting to remove the left scuff plate myself. Unfortunately it doesn't help much.

 

I would use a trim panel tool from your local tool dealer. They should sell one that will reach under the scuff plate so you can pry directly on the clips that hold it in place.
As a side note my Tacoma came from the dealer with the sill protectors already installed.

 

it should pop right off. it will be difficult but with enough pressure it should.

 

Thanks all. It's a '07 DC but I'm sure all of them come off the same way. I will try the putty knife and let you all know how it goes

 

I removed mine today. I just slid my fingers underneath the trim panel from the carpet side and it popped right off. It also just snaps right in. No problemo. In fact I had the scuff plate off, the lower dash panel and the left kick panel in order to install my trailer wiring harness.

 

yup, did the same thing today. Started at the rear, carpet side on each panel and pulled straight up. Popped right off
