2013 TRD Sport - Whistle - Thoughts

First off Hi everyone, just joined this site, great site.

Just picked up a 2013 TRD Sport yesteday. This is my 5th new gen tacoma, owned a 2008, 2009, 2010 twice ( yes Im crazy). So what I didnt notice on the test drive after shutting off the new 2013 is a whistle type sound that last 1 to 2 seconds after you shut down. So I called the dealer to tell them Im bringing it Monday afterwork. But still annoyed at the fact its making moise, I popped the hood to notice the airbox assembly is diferent now than previos years. No more panel filter and box but a tube that goes into the fender and this I pinpointed is where the noise is coming from after my buddy shut the truck down while I stood outside and listened.

So 2012 to 2013 owners is this normal? or do I have an issue here? You guys get like a whistle noise at shut down?

Mine does the same thing and it's the smog pump. I didn't take it in to have it looked at but others on here did and apparently it's normal. You'll get used to it after awhile!

 

Really, so you think I should take it, or dont waste my time? And this noise you have comes from the lefts ide of the engine bay, near the air tube that goes into the fender, or that area? its like a WWhhhhiizzSSShhiiiii for 2 seconds..LOL

Yep, that about describes the noise pretty well. I haven't looked under the hood to see exactly where it's coming from, though. But based on other people's posts describing the sound it has to be the same thing.

I suppose you if really need peace of mind you can take it in! If so, let me know what the tech says

 

Hey I have a 2013 TRD O/F and mine does same thing-I spoke to the dealer and had them listen to it to make sure, but it is normal. It is the secondary air injection pump, and its just air escaping the pressurized system. At least thats what my research turned up and what the dealer tech said...

 

How many miles do you drive a year?

 

Ya it's the air pump. It runs on start up to help light the cat faster. You'll also here it when you shut off the engine. Totally normal.

 

I have 2013 too and I hate the noise, it sounds like something is wrong with the truck. I found the noise maker and it sits on the fender next to the air intake tube. Has anyone diconnected theirs? I'm sure it would be complicated but I'm willing to disconnect/remove it.

Thanks everyone for the replys, I feel better knowning I didnt get a lemon or something like that. Like I stated my other Tacos never made that noise. That whole airbox assembly and area is all new, must be new for 2012+.

 

yeah, from what I understand the older models had it too, but it was buried more in the fender so you didnt hear the noise as much.

 

Just curious if it had something to do with the constant trade in of the same type of vehicle.

 

Naw.. Tacomas are the best thats why I've had so many..5 new gen, and 3 older gen..I get bored with cars/trucks, I mod, and get something else, car truck , back and forth. It's a sickness. But I've promised myself, to keep this as long as possible.

 

I think the 3rd gen is coming next year.

Completely normal, do not take it in for that.

Tell people its your supercharger, my brother actually thought I was telling the truth, had to break it to him that it was the pump.

 

Are you sure the whistle doesn't go wooo woooo?!!

 

Ok guys, seems to be normal. I stopped at the dealer on my way home today. made them open us 6 trucks and start the engine and stop. 5 out of 6 were as noticable as mine, one was much quieter than all the rest. Between you all, and todays test, I'd say its normal.

Time to go browse now and see what I want to mod first!
