So I just bought a 2010 Tacoma with 41,00 miles about a month ago from a toyota dealership. Sunday my truck was parked at the airport for 4 days and it started up just fine and I drove to the gas station to fill her up. After it was gased the truck wouldn't start. Half an hour later after messing with just about every thing (and a few kind words were shouted) it fired right up like if nothing had happened. Monday morning the truck wouldn't start but I fidled with the battery and it started. I went to auto zone to have the battery tested and they said the battery was fine but the started needed to be replaced. Does a starter usually go out at only 42,000 miles? Please Help

i just replaced mine at 115,000. It would start some times and others it wouldn't even make a noise when i turned the key. or some times it would turn over really late. my cost of the starter was around 250 at the dealer.

Like anything mechanical it can break at any time. That time frame I would say no unless it was abused ex. Mine was fine until I submerged by truck at 85K and even then it would work intermittently. Check all your connections, the fact that you fiddled with the battery makes me wonder about that. If it's intermittent it's going to be a pain in the dick to troubleshoot for a mechanic anyway (been there done that too many times) and a half assed shop is going to want to replace it anyway. Start simple then go for broke.

A bumper here, some tires there..... you know, stuff.
I have never had good luck with autozone telling me what is still good and what needs replaced. my .02. I would double check all your grounds/power to the starter and clean the connections. I had my starter go bad about a month ago and replaced the contacts and it works great now. you might try that first since the contacts are only about $25 vs the cost of a whole new starter

then again i have a 1st gen. but good luck anyways

check the connections at the battery, make sure you clean them and visually inspect the cables all the way to the starter. I doubt its your starter. the only time you need the battery is to start the vehicle. loose connections and dirty battery posts are the probable cause :)
