Today I was driving around town with my dad. I was just shifting like normal to me, which is shifting 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th and then to 6th. He asked me why I skipped 5th, honestly I wasn't even thinking about it and just did it. It raised the thought in my mind, how does everyone else shift? :burnrubber:

If I'm accelerating hard sometimes I'll let off at the top of 4th and shift into 5th but keep the clutch in and go to 6th, essentially skipping 5th. I hardly ever flat out skip a shift in the pattern... Just habit from driving big old trucks with finiky transmissions i guess.

In older trucks, I don't ever skip any gears. I actually use every gear, unless starting out and can skip the low end gears. By the way very nice truck. I think white and black makes a mean looking truck.

I rarely downshift when coming to a stop. I just push in the clutch (sometimes go into neutral) and use the brakes. I do downshift if there are bad road conditions.

    Thanks.

The shifting is just more habit than anything i guess. The one thing that bugs me about the 1GR-FE is the rev hang between gears. When the truck is warming up it shifts like i think it should all the time... with revs dropping nicely between shifts. Oh well, that's my only complaint and I'm about over it now after 5k miles on the truck...

Also i was going to mention its hard to rev match downshifts with this dumb drive by wire throttle... I LOVE that throttle cable feel, and miss it, you always know how much throttle your blipping with a cable...

Yeah the rev hang, but the other complaint or idea I have is that Toyota should have changed the gear ratios alittle bit. Like make 1st a true low and 2nd the first road gear and make more of a difference between 5th and 6th to get rpms lower with at highway speeds.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I never skip gears on this truck 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. On my 67 Ford F250 I always take off in 2nd, first is granny compound low for towing, its only really there to get a heavy load moving.

    stock, for now
I use every gear, usually. I absolutely hate this transmission, I actually can't believe i searched high and low to find a manual.

Love the truck, hate the trans/throttle by wire. Under 50K and I will need a new clutch(bought the truck used)

Agreed as well, 6th rolls too high at 70 compared to the autos, my scanguage reads ~2800 at 80 when i'm cruising in the 75 mph zones out here. I still get 17 MPG at 80 but it feels a bit high to cruise for hours on end at, like when I drive home all the way accross south dakota... I'll still probably do it but I wont be happy about it.

Kinda wish I had a manual..but only hear y'all complain about the taco manual being garbage...plus after driving a 10-speed all day it's nice to just hop into an automatic and go home

I like the manual and wouldn't trade it for the auto. Just want a few changes.

Same here, I wouldn't trade being able to pick what gear I want, when I want, even though it's not perfect it's better than an auto for my taste.

    I generally shift from P to D...sometimes to R.

Back when I had a 5-speed, I'd pretty routinely skip 4th unless I needed the acceleration.

:pout: I miss driving a standard.

A little of this and a little of that.
+1 The rev hang and 6th ratio are my two biggest complaints. But I still prefer it to an auto.

    Nice, the K.I.S.S. method!
