I purchased a 04 taco TRD 4x4 for $500.00, po ran the 3.4L low on oil and seized/broke a camshaft [pics in the 1st gen section]. I found a complete 3.4 from a 99 4runner 4x4 for $600.00, my question is what differences is there from a 99 4runner 3.4 to a 04 taco 3.4? I was considering having my shortblock rebuilt and replacing the heads, will the 1999 heads work on a 2004? Any differences in the emission equipment? Sorry for all the ???'s but this is the cheapest i've found a complete 3.4L and if it will work for me i wanna grab it and get some momentum to this project, thanks.

I swapped my 5vz in my 02' with an engine from a different year tacoma.. there were some differences with the intake manifolds and vacuum lines, but it worked fine. The motor should be the same, it's a 5vz. I'd say go for it, maybe call a place like LCE engineering first, and buy gaskets from them. http://www.lceperformance.com/

Thanks but i already passed on the deal. After the holidays i'm gonna pull my engine out and have the shortblock rebuilt at a local machine shop, i found complete re-maned heads from a place in N.C. for $420.00 each. I'll order a timing belt/w.p. kit and assemble it myself. But i'm still keepin' a eye out for a deal on a used 01-04 tacoma engine, thanks again

If you were closer to mass you could buy my 02 5vz with 210xxx miles on it.. Ran fine just a little sluggish with all the miles, I have it for sale on cl for $200 with a new timing belt
