Good quality jumper cables, not the 8 or 10 gauge cheapies most places sell. Tire pump (electric if you are lazy). 3/8 drive socket set, combination wrench set, screwdrivers, Mexican speed wrenches (also known as crescent wrenches), T-type lug wrench, ground cloth...

I think: basic socket set screw drivers and cheap multi-tool, jumper cables, quality flash light and extra long life batteries, flares, blanket, bottled water, granola bars etc...(MRE), small fire extinguisher, extra set of clothes/socks, phone charger, tire plug set (and a cheap electric compressor optional), a lug wrench that fits (I find the star wrenches work well and you can help others out in a pinch), duct tape, electrical tape, bailing wire. You could go on and on but I think you could overcome a lot of shitty situations with just that.

There was a thread similar to this not too long ago. I will have to look around for it when I get time. It was kind of geared toward winter items though.

One time I got my Jeep stuck in a canyon close to my house (10 or 15 miles) in BFE NV in the rain late at night. My phone had no service and I couldn't find my normal flashlight, but I found my hand crank flashlight and my poncho, so I started walking out of the canyon. This was of course before phones had flashlights. I could barely see where I was going and I had to keep stopping to wind up the stupid POS flashlight, finally got some service, and called someone to come pull me out.

Lesson learned? I hate those flashlights.

In the same canyon I got the shits real bad in my buddies truck. I always have TP in mine, or at least paper towels or tissues. I ended up using the insulation out of his ford ranger. The purple stuff.

    Good call on the TP.
