Anyone know? TRD Supercharger

I hear you. Thanks for the info. This seals the deal for me. I wouldn't ever consider a URD SC on a truck with a warranty. I always get an extended warranty, just in case, sure dont want to void it. I like the fact that TRD offers a SC and will honor the warranty on my Taco. Doesnt get any better than that.

Hopefully people havent put URD SC on a truck with a long warranty. Doesnt seem like you get enough gain over TRD to give up the warranty. Its all good, whatever people like.

If the TRD supercharger has more torque down under then it will and should win the race every time. The current record holders of the fastest tacos to my knowledge have TRD superchargers with tons of supporting mods. Slap a 2.8 pulley on it, and call it a day. 330 horse on a midsize truck is more then plenty for me. Not to mention if you have a forced induction manifold that lets you retain the factory warranty and still beat the piss out of the vehicle without having to demod when it breaks is good enough for me!!

 

Doesn't have to be for speed. Could make towing easier.

I knew it. Haha, I'm thinking of something differently. I'm still very new to the truck/towing world so my wording is still off. The mechanics portion of it is what is no sweat for me to talk about all day.

 

Say you were towing a 6500lb (max towing capacity of a 2nd gen) camper with your 4.0L NA motor and come to a steep hill. You are likely going to be going a lot slower up the hill than the posted speed limit. With the S/C added you could likely maintain the speed limit now.

Max Towing capacity is based on lots of things, like suspension, frame strength, your weight to towed weight ratio, brake size, etc.

 

^^ gotcha, yeah basically you are not straining the motor as bad when you are towing with the SC in comparison as to without it. More the reason why I should get one, with a URD pulley

 

I'm not sure I agree with that, but I lack the knowledge to really know for sure. Doesn't the S/C put more "strain" (not sure if that is the right word, umm... "wear and tear" maybe) on a motor itself. It may not be an issue as the motor is overdesigned from the factory to handle more power than the S/C can deliver, but I would still think it would cause the engine more "harm" (that word may be a bit strong) because before the motor would slow down going up the hill and now it is going faster up the hill.

Like I said I am not qualified to answer that. haha, but that is my take on that. May not even be a big deal in the long run, just thought I would throw it out there.

 

Well the ideology behind it is that throwing on any kind of FI shortens the lifespan of the engine. Being that this is a toyota motor it really all doesn't matter, especially being more-so that this beast was designed to work with the 4.0L, longevity is very much put in mind.

Look at their Old Supra motor, that stock block (I can't remember if the lower end internals too can handle up to somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 to 900HP without an issue. That's insanity! If you are pulling a load with the supercharger you are not straining the motor as bad because the supercharger is forcing in more power into the engine that otherwise without it would be working much harder at a much higher RPM.

My vote for longevity when hauling goes to the Taco fitted with the SC then the one without it.

 

Love my TRD Supercharger Toyota did everything in one day for about $5200. Not bad since its completely warrented under my powertrain. The best thing I've noticed is that elevation changes are a breeze. Cannot believe how much smoother it is. My 2008 would struggle so much I would need take it off crusie control so I wouldnt red line.

 

I would have to agree mj918, I have noticed better power, but not really an increase in speed(if that makes since). I had mine out yesterday in some sandy washes, the power was great, no more downshifting.

 

Yah who cares about speed, the speed is not what is important. It's all about that torque and power all over the range where It really matters.

 

its not speed so much as it is better towing , and if you search you may even read a few posts where folks actually gain a decent MPG HWY.

Wrong it's a tacoma

 

With a Tundra Engine/power train, that compressor is slug under the plenum between the runners, whereas the 4.0 is on the side of the runners.

I highly agree, the taco would be an unstoppable bullet and a force to be reckoned with on the road and off.
