I have 08 Tacoma 4X4. For a couple yrs I hear a ticking after 45 mph. It sounded like a rock in the tires and I would only hear it if I was next to wall or something to bounce the noise back. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find the problem. Now the ticking is louder over several yrs. No rocks in my tires and replaced the plastic bushings in my springs on the rear axle. Any ideas on what that noise is? I looked on line and saw that I'm not the only one with that problem but found no solutions. Does anyone know what this annoying ticking is, that sounds like a rock in your tire?

You need to give more information so we can help,

    1) miles on truck?
2)model of truck, be it a sport or offroad or sr5?
3)how long you've been actually hearing this ticking that you knew for sure wasn't a rock in one of the tires??
hearing the noise for several yrs on an 08 does not compute!

It is a pre runner. The ticking started around 37k and the truck is now at 72k. The ticking got louder and more noticable with in the last 5k miles.

It could be the centercaps to your wheels. I had a nissan truck that did this. I had to put electrical tape on them for it to stop.

It does sound like it could be plastic. I'll take caps out and see. And I agree with it doesn't seem to be bothering anything just really annoying.

IIRC, the PR does not have greasable u-joints.
If the cap thing doesn't work, you might want to check your joints,
sometimes they will make a ticking noise when the joint grease drys out and over time the trunion will gall from heat and cause ridges on the trunion, the ticking your hearing is the needles jumping the ridges

The caps are not the problem. Time to look at the u joints. When I figure this out I'll let everyone know what i find. Thank for your inputs.
