    Hi All,
Loooooong time lurker, first time poster. This forum convinced me that I need a ’01-’04 Taco TRD Prerunner, but I first need to sell my ’86 Toyota 4x4 pickup. I’ve had it for 14 years, and really don’t know how much to ask for it. Pricing advice appreciated. Please see description and pics below and tell me if $3,500 is in the ballpark or too high. KBB, NADA and Autotrader comps have me confused as to what price is appropriate.

Mods, if this is misplaced, please move (with my apologies). I intend to make this my FS listing once I understand what’s a fair price.
    Thanks!

1986 Toyota 4x4 with 22RE Engine (fuel injected)
    • 171k, 5 speed manual
    • 31x10.5 MESA A/P tires on stock alloys (about 50% tread)
    • Manual locking hubs, manual transfer case. No electronic gizmos to fail on the trail.

    The Good

    • Stock, unmolested, un-modded truck.
    • Interior is as plush as I’ve ever seen for this generation truck. Has full carpeting, door panels with pockets, reclining bucket seats, center console with storage, etc. Custom parcel shelf behind seats. Even has little map lights in the ceiling.
    • Pop up Sunroof
    • Wing windows (Best. Invention. Ever.)
    • Sliding rear window
    • Window tint on rear, sunroof and sides
    • Dash is in mint condition (has had cover since new)
    • Bucket seat fabric is unstained and looks fresh (just removed covers that have been on there for 14+ years)
    • Full factory gauges: speedo, tach, oil, fuel, voltage, temp. Newer Toyota radio/cassette. Probably from late 90s.
    • 4wd system works fine; hasn’t ever been offroad. But I exercise the gears and lube the zerks every year.
    • Regularly maintained (full records from last 14 years)
    • Brand new battery, hoses and water pump
    • Just passed smog with flying colors. Did new O2 sensor a few years back.
    • Engine runs strong; burns no oil.
    • Starts every time. Tracks straight and true on the highway, no wobble or shimmy
    • Beefy Smittybilt rear bumper
    • No trailer hitch – never towed anything.
    • CA car, never seen snow or road salt. Frame and undercarriage is solid.
    • Have owner’s manual, factory service manual, original jack and tools.

    The Bad
    • Clear coat has faded, so “not showroom fresh”. Haven’t tried waxing it in quite a while.
    • Engine burns (uses) no oil, but there’s always had some oil on outside of block. Never dripped on my driveway, so I never tried to fix leak. But it does look black and sticky underneath.
    • Clearcoat peeling on some parts of the wheels.
    • Truck had no tailgate when I got it, so I bought a replacement gray one. It’s a different shade than the rest of the truck.
    • Previous owner replaced passenger fender, so it also is a slightly different shade of gray (and doesn’t have the side graphic)
    • Radiator has a small pinhole leak. Will try some leak-stop soon. No coolant in oil, but some does appear on the back of the skid plates under the engine. Thought it was the waterpump leaking, but that wasn’t the issue. (but now have a brand new water pump!)
    • Only two of four radio speakers work
    • No AC. I use the wing windows, and don’t miss it. Really.
    • Small cracks around screws in taillights
    • E-brake is out of adjustment
    • Missing plastic cover on interior light
    • Small tear in vinyl on side of driver’s seat
    • Horn doesn’t work. Use finger instead. ;)
    • Tint on passenger side window probably should be replaced. Starting to peel up at the bottom
    • Rust blister on driver’s a-pillar and on drivers bed seam above rear wheel. Appeared about 10 years ago, and (in my climate) hasn’t changed or gotten worse.
    • My son wrote his name (in cursive) with a rock on the roof when he was 5. Can’t see it unless your eight feet tall, or standing in the bed. He’s twelve now, and denies ever doing it. I tell him nobody else would vandalize my truck by writing his name!

check out sites like gargurus or something and see what similar pickups are selling for. Also check out the BST threads on YotaTech. You can't trust KBB or similar considering these pickups will sell for more than they are "worth" on a lot of those sites. It is only "worth" what people will pay for it and they are getting harder and harder to find in good condition so that is in your favor. It all depends on how fast you want to sell it. Shoot low and sell it quick or ask a bit high knowing that eventually someone will pay that for it because he really wants a Toyota Pickup.

You also may want to cruise the forum and see how many hundreds of people regret nothing more than selling their old Toyota Pickup

I think your price is in the ball park. I look on craigslist for toyota pickups daily in the Washington state areas. I bet you could even ask for more than that. Here (in the Seattle area) people ask anywhere from 3500 to 6000 for a truck in similar condition to yours on craigslist... I don't know if they end up selling them for that though...

Thanks for your pricing insight. I taped a for sale sign to the rear window, parked it outside my office, and found a cash buyer in two days. Didn't even get a chance to come back here and write a real 'for sale' ad.
After 14 years, I'm sad to see it go, but now I can shop in earnest for a '01-'04 TRD Prerunner!

I wouldn't sell ifI were you. You're gonna miss the 4x. I wouldnt take less than $3k for it. Put in on Craigslist for $5k and let them low ball. And don't use the stop leak. Pay the 100 and buy a new radiator. Remember the stop leak will spread into the engine. Ca cause future issues.
