Has anyone built or bought an inside the bed storage box and mounted it on the forward bed notches. This would still allow a certain amount of long item materials to be carried on the floor and under the storage box.

I was thinking of using the in-bed rails to secure the box down on both the front and sides.

I do not want the across top wall mounted storage box.

I wish to store and secure all the tow hitches, short shovel, hi-lift, hand winch, tow straps etc. for self extraction and of course for rescuing the Swedish Bikini team in their time of trouble should I come upon them.

Atomic47, I am wanting to be able to carry and secure some of the tools in my truck bed. I am wanting to avoid having a tow hitch come flying through my rear window during a panic stop. I have a A.R.E. shell on the bed, so a cross mount tool box would not work.

I am thinking of putting a plank in the bed notches to mount and lift off of the floor either a custom built wood / metal box or a 48 inch fender mount tool box. I would secure the box to the bed using the front and side bed rails.

I live on a lonely, hilly, curvy backroad. It is the kind of road where passing vehicles each day can be counted on one hand. Having the tools to pull myself out becomes real important in winter. And of course there is always the Swedish Bikini team needing rescued.

Isn't that why we all carry recovery equipment around? ;)

I like where your idea is going and have thought of similiar ideas myself. I need to save as much floor space as possible for the dogs so that's why I hesitate following through. That and my hilift is in the way...

Have you considered ammo cans along the back or side rails?

    Gylar,

With the shortbed you have, floor space becomes real premium.

Perhaps a box only 8-10 inches in height, raised up from the bed notches enough to allow your dogs room underneath might serve you. Consider having 2 "L" shaped brackets made at a machine shop. The short tongue of the "L" could sit in the bed notches. On the side where Hi-lift is mounted, put the long side of the "L" to the inside of the bed/box. opposite on other side. This would leave a gap for your hi-lift.

I was thinking of mounting my Hi-Lift inside of my storage box. I have looked at some of the cheaper sheet steel gun cabinets, about $100.

Thanks everyone. There were several good ideas mentioned. I will study them and see which ones fit my needs and intended uses best. I want to be prepared should the Swedish Bikini team get stuck in the ditch here again.
