Homemade cold air!

    Alright so I was tired of my deck plate mod airbox and crappy filter so it was either make a cold air or get a kn filter. I went with a cold air. I decided on a hollow ended spectre air filter that has a extra large hole for attachment to the intake. (I think my stock maf sensor was busted off so it worked out well) I just basically slapped the sucker on there and put a breather filter on the random hose that was left just in case! It seems to have made a pretty big difference already! Much better throttle response and it screams a little louder ;). You can hear it sucking air in the cab reallllly well and it sounds equally badass with the hood popped. Let me know what you think! :cool:

    Well...you asked what we think.....
    Instead of sucking air from the passenger fenderwell (which is actually cold air), you are now sucking in air that's 6 inches away from the exhaust manifold. Effectively you just made a hot air intake. I'd bet my money you dyno'd your truck before and after, you lost ponies.

    AND, the new "better" filter is letting far more fine particles into the engine that will score the cylinder walls and lead to increased oil consumption.

    Referring to the OEM filter as a "crappy filter" is a very ignorant statement.
    The OEM filter does an extremely good job at filtering, and can flow more air than any normally aspirated engine needs.


    There is one and only one reason for this mod
    Because, racetruck.

    A warm air intake might get you better gas mileage in cold weather. Less oxygen=less power.

    Agreed. The factory Denso filters are top notch.
    And to the point of racetrucks that run open air filters in the desert, even they don't run a wide open filter because of all the dirt and shit that passes thru them. They all run a pre-filter screens over the open air filters.

    It's the ac hose. And the whole shebang costs less than 40. I couldn't afford an actual cold air. The warmer air will be fine until summer starts because it's cold down here. Later down the road I plan on building a heat shield from the radiator. I will cut the solid mesh thing out and put an actual mesh which will be nice during the summer.

    I did not have the oem filter in there to begin with. I had a 5$ paper filter. So yeah this is a better filter. I will get a dust guard on it soon as well as I do race the truck in the spring and summer at my local off road park.

    It looks cool, but I have to agree with jberry813 and Rich91710 that you changed it from a factory cold air to hot air, which is probably not going to help you a lot, especially when summer comes along. But for now, rock it!:headbang:

    I did want the criticism it never hurts I'm young and need to learn. But if this turns out bad then it's on me. For now it works well. I even got an extra 20 miles on a tank this week. So far I'm happy.

    Warmer air is likely helping your mileage.

    As far as engine wear caused by dirt, I had a K&N drop-in in my '94 p/u and took it to 225k.
    It would burn a quart every 3000 miles, oil pressure dropped like a rock at idle, and it was a little down on power (likely a stretched timing chain) but it never let me down.

    Ok so you guys suggested a heat shield. So I got to thinking. I'm no fabricator by any means so I started looking at my stock airbox and my dremel and said what the hell. I started by widening the hole where the maf sensor was to at least 4 inches wide. (the sensor broke off years ago and it was taped on) then I took the lid off and the front wall off. Then I took the rest of the plastic in front of the lid off. I wanted to use the large cone filter still and I couldn't fit it on the maf sensor and have enough room to put it in the air box. So I went to Lowes with maf sensor in hand and played around for a while. I ended up with a 3 in pvc coupler and a 3in no hub rubber and metal couple with large hose clamps on them. This made the connections all air tight so the air comes from the filter. I wanted to keep all the mounts om the box so it didn't wobble so I replaced the bolts on those as I lost 2 of them when I took it out originally. :banghead: I hope this will suffice as a budget cold air and hope it will bring colder air to the engine and not from the manifold.
