IMO, the wood isn't necessary, but it wouldn't hurt anything.

Yes. I did the same thing when transporting my ST. But I agree it might not be necessary, I still did it.

i would imagine a 2x12 would be fine then.

My truck has hauled an '06 GSX-R750, an '07 DR-650SE, and an '09 YZ-250f without any bracing or wood, and my tailgate is fine. Is there a bolt-on reinforcement kit just for peace of mind?

Rethink how you want to use that 2x12. You want to lay the wood across the tailgate (think left to right). This way when the back tire of the bike rests on the wood the weight is distributed across the whole tailgate instead of being cntered in the middle.

Has anyone put two dirtbikes in the back of their DCSB? Looking at trying to get a WR450 and CRF450 to fit.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
This must be a problem with early model trucks, I've hauled a grizzly 660 atv that weighs about 700lbs in my truck and it didn't bend the gate. I haul my 400ex all the time as well and it weighs about 400lbs.

Quads (or 4 wheelers as I call em) disburse the weight differently than a bike thats got the weight on the 1 rear wheel..... sitting in the middle of the tailgate right where its the weakest.

Have to agree with the OP here 2X12 front to back is goin to put less stress on his tailgate, just make sure the 2X12 doesn't slide on the truck bed

I regularly haul my track bike (03 GSXR 750) and my DD (08 FZ1) both very heavy and have never had problems. It used to creak when I would stand directly on it with the bike though. Once I reinforced the tailgate it stopped creaking. With or with out the 2x4 you still have to load it by putting all the weight on it when you walk it up. You should be fine.

they will fit no problem, will be doing the same thing this weekend. even managed to squeeze a trx 450 (atv) and my crf 450 into my 07 dcsb though it was a little sketchy (rear tire of the bike was about and inch from falling off the back of the tailgate)

OP: never had problems with either of my tacomas bending the tailgates and i haul bikes/ atv's/ other junk all the time. even blasted through the desert a few times with old truck with a bike in the back bouncing around up and down on the tailgate
