I just wanted to share my .02 as a person having both of the cars in the past and also putting a lot of power into them.

1st I am curious if he is talking about an actual BOV or possibly a BPV for the Subie.

2nd I completely do not agree that the Evo is not reliable as I had one pushing 28psi on a full ball bearing turbo making over 450 at the wheels and the only issue I ever had in over 100k was the standard clutches and brake upgrades.

If it were my choice I would take the STI over the Evo because I am not a huge fan of the VIII. I had a IX and it was worlds better, also with the Evo I hope it is a GSR and not the MR, as the 5sp seems to be much stronger than the 6sp.

Either way I do agree with the fact that it just depends on the previous owner or owners...you may get one very well cared for like mine with meticulous maintenance, or you can always end up with one that was beat to shit. As stated a leakdown is always a good choice buying any used car....however if the Subie was newer than an 07 I would say it is a MUST as they tend to have some ringland failures.

You should log on to either IWSTI.com or NASIOC.com and just troll around a little bit, there is always an abundance of information on there.

Good luck with your choice man..either one can be a sick ass ride!!

I concur. Best decisions ever made was leaving the import car scene. Bought a taco for utility and cool factor and a sportbike for my thrill fix :)

High performance cars = High cost of repairs every month it seems like

I jumped out of a 2005 Pontiac GTO which I seemed to be doing major repairs from every year (Anything from the rebuilding the transmission itself to fixing a major leak or replacing the junk rear end) and honestly I just wanted something which wasn't going to be such a piece of junk, (in my mind at least) and I knew was going to have a much lower cost of ownership. I decided with the great looking improvement on the front end on Tacoma for 2012 that it is finally time to cross over into the realm of the truck world, and I am really glad I am, I am now an avid offroader and outdoor junkie. I haven't looked back ever since. I found I can get the same kind of exhilaration out of the Tacoma as I did with the goat in a different and much legal/safe way.

The turbo Subaru engines break. A lot. The 2.5L STi and 06+ WRX engines break piston ring lands, even on un-modified cars. The older 02-04 WRX 2L engines eat bearings, even on un-modified cars. Proper maintenance does not seem to have any impact on either of these issues. I have owned a few Subarus, and have rebuilt/replaced a LOT of broken WRX and STi engines in the past few years.

Edit: Forgot about the oil pickup issues they have too. The tube is braized to a flange and has a pretty high failure rate.

You saw ringland issues on the 06 motors? I thought all the ringland issues were due to the retune in 07.

The bearings were always a case of the motors being overly sensitive to oil starvation and lack of quality baffling in the pans (as well as Mobil 1's tendency to shear).

I've got an 06 that I baby and haven't had any issues with, but I find myself always worried it could break at any given moment. I've got an oil pressure gauge, an oil temperature gauge, a KillerB oil pickup, and check the oil before I drive it every time I drive it, and then at every fill up.

What I would give for some quality seats...

I have replaced broken pistons in all years 04-11. Most of them were 07-09.

My 05 made it 158k miles, on the original clutch. I owned it for 100k of those and regularly drive it like it was meant to be driven. They can be a longish lasting turbo car, but I feel like their engineers and the ones in charge of metal selection left a lot to be wished for.

To the OP, honestly the best advice would be for you to go to evolutionm and nasioc and research both cars you're considering trading for. If I hadn't recently had a child I would still be driving around in my full sized go-kart (05 STi).

FWIW, my '05 WRX is Stage II and I'm at 105k miles with ZERO issues. Still on the stock clutch and going strong.
