air bag sensor...where do i get one and how do i replace it

i have a 2007 taco 4x4 double cab. the criminals at toyota want to charge me $400.00 just for the sensor plus install. does anybody know where i can order one cheaper and how do i install it? toyota told me it was the sensor located in the front left fender. any help would be awesome! thanks tacojack

Would you mind posting some more information on the sensor in question? You have several sensors and I would not be comfortable without clarifying that you need to be 100% POSITIVE what part you are replacing when it comes to SRS components.

Do you have a copy of the estimate with a part number on it? that would be best. Then we can go from there to help you locate the correct part.

According to my system here, if it IS a front sensor, then the labor time charged should have been no more that 1.5 hours total (including diagnostics) plus the price of the part, as well as taxes and typical shop fees. In New York the labor rate I have found is approximately $92 per hour. The sensor (if it is the one I am thinking) is about $80. This would add up to about $225 before any other fees. I know a lot of people think the dealerships are a bunch of crooks, but I have worked for dealerships for over 20 years, and I find that this is not generally true. Do they charge more than an independent? Yes, but their factory trained techs are better trained on your specific vehicle than most of your independent shops. (And I OWN an independent shop, so no, I am not trying to be biased towards dealerships) THIS is what you are paying for in some cases.

If their estimate was for $400, then I would love to review their estimate to see where the additional $175 comes from. Perhaps the estimate included something that was not mentioned?

 

That does sound kinda hi to me also Bill. Your Labor time is right unless there is something else going on. I'm curious also.

 

I do not have the estimate with me at this time. The sensor the dealer said was bad was the driver side front air bag sensor. Not sure how it was broken down into cost. But when they told me it would be $400 to replace the sensor I thought that was a lot of $$$$. Actually anytime I go to my Toyota dealer their prices always make me say hhmmmm. I am not a big fan of going to the dealer, that's why I try to do most of the work myself if I can, within reason. If I find the actual estimate I will let you know. Sorry I couldn't get the info you needed at this time. Thanks for your reply.
