It will affected your handeling/distance of safe travel on shocks when offroading.....as far as if you want only a look of being lifted for street only there fine but if you do offroad id sayve up, yes i know its a 5 lug 2wd but i had a 2wd ranger that went in 4wd trails -the deep mud so it can be worth your time and money...im by no means a expert but i just spent many hours reading on this site and learning from others. just as a warning this site will suck you in lol

I too am new to this site but after spending some serous time on here, I have learned much from members and reevaluated my modification plans. Good stuff here but my eyes are seeing $$$$$$ and the wallet is getting thin. Its dangerous to surf this site with your credit card in arms reach!

What folks are getting at is that there are three basic types of Tacoma pickup truck:

The base model "5 lug" which is most recognizable by the fact that the wheels are held on with 5 lug nuts. This is what you have.

Or the "6 lug" 4x4 four wheel drive pickup.

Or the "PreRunner" which is a two wheel drive, but aside from that shares its suspension with the 4x4.

(There's also the X-Runner - horse of a different color)

You have a 5 lug. Now, it is generally considered a waste of time and money to try and turn a 5 lug into a 4x4 or pre-runner. If that's what you want, sell what you've got and buy that to begin with.

You *can* lift a 5 lug. A couple makers build spacer lifts for it. "Fat Bobs" is one. But after it's lifted - it'll be roughly the same height as a 4x4 is to start with. So if your goal is a "lifted 4x4" like the picture you posted, your best starting point is a Tacoma 4x4 pickup. It's also possible to use a 5 lug as a starting point for a complete "long travel" suspension replacement. However that's basically a complete truck chassis/axle/suspension rebuild and will cost far more than $10,000.

All that said - many folks are happy with their 5 lugs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's a great pickup truck for what it is: basic, economical, reliable. And TW has a "5 lug" forum dedicated to just to them.

We think the picture you showed is a picture of "stunt man hans" who spent like $40,000 on his truck, then had to take a huge bath when he decided to sell it two years later only could get like $26,000.

It's a cautionary tale for blowing big bucks on modifications: use this site as a resource, build what you want, but don't ever expect to get the money you spend back out again.

    OP,

Besides wanting your Tacoma to look like the picture that your friend gave you, what would you like to do with your truck? If you're planning on going off-roading, you may want to reconsider. If you plan to use the truck as a daily driver, you'll be fine, but as many have mentioned it will cost some $$$ and hard work. Don't think that everyone is being negative towards you. They're just trying to help you make the right decisions. Let us know what your goals are, so everyone can guide you in the right direction.

If you decide to go through with this build, what is your projected budget? Once you've come up with a budget, start making a list of parts that you would need to purchase to determine if you can accomplish the build within your allocated budget.

    Good luck.

Wow! Thanks for actually taking the time to write all that out! But I've never been off-roading or anything like that, I only drive on pavement. So i dont meed any hardcore, mount everest climbing, shocks. and My budget is about a few grand.

    Welcome!!

for street use then spacers should be fine but as said before, a reasonable lift (2-3") will still bring it to a 6 lugs stock height. maybe thats good enough tho! good luck

    OP,

Your best bet would be to search/post in the suspension or 2nd Gen forums. This forum is mainly to introduce yourself, so you're not going to get many hits. Also, check through the vendors list for those who offer suspension parts and send them a message asking if they offer shocks/struts/AALs/leaf packs for 5 lug 2nd gen tacomas. I'll see what I can find from my end, but I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to Tacomas.
