new guy here, tri-fold soft or hard bed cover? my Tacoma doesn't have a locking tailgate (quite surprised, since it's a 2013).

I have an undercover hard cover installed on the 12 tacoma. Overall it's a really nice cover to have but the tacoma's bed isn't deep enough for a hard cover. I have a really tough time hauling larger than normal items while we are out and about.
Just last night we picked up a garden hose reel/container thing from the father in law and it would not fit in the back with the lid closed. So I ended up putting it in the cab.
You can stand on this lid and it worked great for hanging a few Christmas lights last year. The cover locks the whole truck bed so you do not need a locking tailgate. Does a decent job keep water out on leaks at all the four corners when sprayed with the water hose at various angles (normal rain fall it does fine). Very easy to take off and pretty light weight.

We are looking at the Bakflip vp and other folding covers at the moment, maybe a retractable cover of some sorts.
