HVAC Humidifier question

    I'm thinking of installing a whole house humidifier pretty soon. I had a very old one that didnt work when i bought the house and i took it out and patched the hole in the duct.

    Whats the difference between a regular powered humidifier and a bypass humidifier. Here are the 2 i'm looking at.

    And my old one was mounted on the Hot side of the furnace...not the return side...Is this correct? Some things i've read say to mount it before the filter on the return line?
