I can understand the first hit or two. The cops just saw a fellow officer nearly killed by this idiot, so it's reasonable to assume he's willing to kill and that he may have something in the hand you can't see (I can't tell from the video if his hands are under his body). You don't approach a violent offender like that and tap his shoulder to see if he's really out. You deliver a hurting blow to make sure he's not responding.

We have the benefit of looking at about 6 seconds worth of video over and over to determine whether or not the guy is out. However once that's reasonably determined, it should stop. They are there to subdue, not exact vengance. I certainly don't envy cops. It's a tough situation when something like this happens.

Personally, I think the guy should be beat for thinking he can outrun them in a minivan.

how can you beat someone like that when they have no self defense?

shoot the prick while hes running or while hes resisting, once he is unable to defend himself there should be no more punishment and that first cop that runs into him after the crash is gona burn with all the rest of the pigs

You can take the pig comment and shove it up your ass.

Unless you have been a cop (I have) you have NO idea what you are talking about. I am NOT condoning what happened and they will likely all be prosecuted (rightly so) but what happens during a high stress incident, like a pursuit. Is that you get tunnel vision and all your nerves are firing like (similar to a fight or flight response). A lot of times you react without ever knowing you've done it until its too late. Did any of you mention that the asshole had run over a deputy???

    WOW!
First off. That guy got fucking close to that cop. put my throat in my stomach and then again watching him roll out of the vehicle.

My take? They guy is going to get what he deserves because it's all on video BUT police officers need to show more restraint if nothing else for their own job security.

I don't think the way they attacked him was warranted because he was clearly unconscious. All the officers involved on tape jumped on him and none had handcuffs, instead they had clubs. They almost looked excited to do it.
    That being said...

The officers have a right to be upset about the situation but by taking this job you are assuming these risks. The power that comes with being an officer also requires judgment and in this situation you have to think, "I am angry but now we have this guy and he will get what he deserves." By assaulting someone like this you only set yourself up for a personal injury counter suit or losing your job and you definitely hurt your chances of bringing this person to justice.

Did this guy get what he deserved? Yes.
Was it the right thing to do? I have to say no.

And some point you have to show restraint and think "Is this worth my security in life? Is this what I have been commissioned to do?"

I'm with you on this one. The scumbag deserves to rot in jail, but beating what appears to be an unconscious man, 5 to 1...it's disturbing.

heres the thing though...evil monkey hit the nail on the head...INITALLY...not a single one of those cops knows the guy is out cold...all they know is that he's NOT in the vehicle...and he needs to be taken care of...period...the first hit IMO is completely acceptable...after that...it shouldnt be hard to figure out he's not responding and not resisting...

I don't care who you are but a good cop would recognize his emotions and control his reactions. PERIOD.

Just because *fight or flight* is part of human nature - doesn't give anyone the right to let that emotion go un-controlled.

Who's to say that a cop (who can't control his nerves) would fly-off-the-handle at any given time?

A good cop is just doing his job and doing it properly (by controlling his actions).

Ehhh...IDK man- He's laying on the ground. Draw and Cover- Order him to put his hands on his head a few times and when he doesn't move at all and everyone has taken a breath or two- Move someone in. Or go with the big blue/green/tan pile and give him the bracelets.

Plus that baton strike looked like it was across the back...and when I got trained it Head Neck Spine and Groin were no-no's for any strike (hand, foot, or baton) unless it was a deadly force situation.

IMO, stupid fucks like this put themselves in the position to get whatever they get whether it's from cops or civilians. The thing that sucks most to me is asswipes getting away with what they did because of what the cops did. I say just prosecute them all. 2 wrongs don't make a right. 2 wrongs don't erase what happened to initial or collateral victims of whatever was done. Cops should be expected to control themselves within the guidelines of current laws just as civilians are expected to, period. They are supposed to be role models & examples of doing what is lawful. Exceptions only open the door for anarchy & chaos & vigilanty action & LETS CRIMINALS WALK. Ends up being stupid on top of stupid for victims but nobody ever focuses on that.

I heard a little more about this case yesterday on the radio. Obviously this isn't first-hand knowledge, but I thought it was interesting.

Wanna know how the chase started? The guy was going into or coming out of a convenience store in a bad neighborhood (go figure) when an un-marked white Ford pulled up and an officer in plain clothes tried to get him to get in the back of the car. The guy offered no evidence that he was a cop.

Apparently this was shortly after some bad guys posed as cops out in Cali and raped women or something... It made national news, but I don't remember it.

Anyway, he refused to get in the car and started to flee. He was tazed, but somehow kept going. He got in the car and the pursuit began.

Turns out it was a cop, and others joined him, which is when asshat should have pulled over. From that point on I consider him entirely at fault, but can you really blame him for not getting into the first car? I don't think unmarked cars should be allowed to pull people over at all, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get into an unmarked car when asked by a plain-clothes officer.

Then the next question is..........What had the dumbass been doing to have been being stalked by plain clothes officers? Still, he brought shit on himself. Cops brought shit on theirselves. Safety of the general public loses.

Yeah... I certainly won't paint this guy as completely innocent. I'm just saying I completely understand how it all started. Once the 'real' cops showed up, you pull over immediately.
