I feel like i may be on borrowed time with the rear diff in my truck. its an 05 base model 4x4 with the 8.4 4.10 rear end. it was diagnosed about 30K miles ago that the rear end needed replaced, the entire third and all. I researched and there is a TSB for it that replaces the whole unit and adds sound deadening to the rear of the cab.

the issue is the rear whines between 55 and 62 mph. other than that, no issues. i wonder if it is a casting issue in the case and thats why they replace the entire unit?

anyways, i was out of the mileage warranty for the TSB fix and didn't have $2200 to shell out. I'm not too terribly worried about the rear end failing, but I would like to have a solution ready if/when the unit fails.

are the older 1st gen 8.4" 4.10 rear ends compatible with the second gen trucks? Or should i limit my search to the 05's and up. well, i guess the 06's and up so i don't run the risk of buying an affected unit again.

i just typed this all very quickly, i hope this makes sense and i didn't skip anything.
