Not sure how to describe this exactly but I hear & feel a drag on the drive train when on the street in 2wd. If I shift into 4wd the sound and the feel stop. Whatever it is seems to be getting worse. 4wd drive is working; I am speculating that maybe it's not fully disengaging out of 4wd. Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or similar experience? It's a 2006 dbl cab, 4L with TRD offroad package & 3" lift. Standard size tires & wheels, 66k miles.

    Thanks
    David

Engine operation is normal? Gas mileage normal? Engine/Transmission RPM/noise is normal??

My wife had a noise - No real feel to it but it was the front wheel bearing. Have you check them???

Near as I can tell gas mileage is normal at least it's not Wheel bearings feel fine.

The best way I can describe the sound is it's like a low pitch growl and I feel it through the drive train as well. It seems to completely go away when I shift into 4WD

I am admittedly pretty ignorant on the Tacoma 4WD system. I am not sure if the front axles are turning the differential & drive shaft all the time and only the xfr cases disengages or if there's a point of disengagement at the wheels as well. Wherever the 4WD disengages, I have a strong hunch it is not completely doing so.

    Thanks for your response.

Thank you! That describes it just about exactly. Now I know where to look.
