Been browsing for a while now, finally signed up :D

Got the truck about a month and a half ago from my uncle. Just started driving. So he gave it to me for a steal. ($3000) I was well aware of the leak but he couldn't for the life of him figure out what it is. (I don't think he looked) Well I started smelling it when I get on it from it burning, so i figured I would look into it. According to the dip stick, I haven't lost much or any at all.

piece of cake problem there...no worries
over 210,000 on my 5vz and it is only just now starting to show the same exact dribblin

common valve cover gasket leak. more of a weep over time really

the only problem is if you let it build up forever it is a fire hazard

    simple fix

any shop can do it, use toyota specified gasket ONLY and toyota specified torque values

also easy to do at home, really easy...just need tools to remove all the clutter above them
and the right gasket material, and torque settings

    Now, you could just:

    cool off motor
gunk and high pressure clean that crap off
use mobil 1 high mileage oil from now on, problem might just go away.

in any case, that is not an emergency, except for the fire hazard issue if
too much oil builds up with dirt and dust...

I just bought my new gaskets on Friday, just need the time to change them. I got them for $19 a side and I also got the spark plug tower gaskets, while I was in there, figured they needed changing after 233k miles ($2.40 ea x6 from my dealership).

You can PM Jorge@CamerlbackToyota for a quote including shipping.

Also, during my "googling" to DIY on these, I found this video, hope it helps.

This helps a good bit, Might take this project up as my second time under the hood (changed the belts yesterday, my power steering has no stutters and handles like a champ) Doesn't seem to hard if you make sure to put everything where you took it from.

    Too few to list.
Could also be like mine. The heads have metal cam plugs in the back that could leak oil. They just need to be re-sealed but valve cover must be taken off to remove the metal plugs.

One thing I would add to that video... take an air hose to your engine prior to starting and get rid of all extra dirt and debris. Then wipe down as much crud as you can prior to opening up the valve covers. This will help reduce chances of anything getting in there that shouldn't be.

I used this kit, comes with everything you need and fits perfect:

I got new plugs, wires, and cleaned throttle body as well.

    Took me about 3 hours.

Yeah, looks a lot worse than it actually is. But the cover bolts do loosen up over time with vibration. I was actually shocked at how loose they were. Granted, they are only 53 in-lbs of torque by fsm, but some of mine weren't even close to snug. Mileage is at 120k and I just figured it would be good to do since I needed plugs anyway.

My valve cover bolts were loose enough that I was getting oil on the exhaust manifold making it smell and smoke a little. I couldn't believe how loose the bolts were.

Thanks for all the feedback. Probably going to give it a better de greasing. tight up the bolts and see how it goes. If I have to go ahead and change them I'll go for it.
