GPS Antenna

Is it possible to wire a GPS unit to the factory XM antenna and it would work for the garmin GPS unit. I don't know what the differences are in antennas. Just thought I'd ask. Ron

Two completely different antenna's. It won't work well, if it works at all.

 

I've never had a GPS w/ an antenna. Are you not going to mount it in the windshield where it doesn't need an external antenna?

 

It is mounted on the windshield but on cloudy or overcast days it loses reception. Ron

 

I dont think the signal is going to be what you need. There are different antennae for the navtraffic portion on xm than satellite radio. I have never looked into it that well so don't completely quote me on this. However if the receive freq is is in range for the antenna to see and convert for the unit it could work. My job involves Sat Com so I understand the theory behind what you are trying to accomplish just not the equipment. Ultimate answer is it is feasable.

 

You have to have a special antenna for that. Garmin has units that will give you XM radio on your GPS unit:

Has anyone removed the XM antenna to see what the hole underneath looks like?

I'm hoping it's an NMO style mount with a 3/4" hole in the roof. There's all sorts of antennas you could mount there in place of XM...scanner, ham radio, CB, GPS.
