Short trips effect on engine

    Hey, I was wondering what you guys thought about buildup of deposits in the engine and what you think constitutes many short trips that would cause more build up then normal. I only live 10 minutes from work and we dont drive my truck with the kids in it often so we take my wifes car more often. So really I only drive to and from work unless I have projects on the house or "fun" time out on some friends land.

    Is there anything you would suggest other than just taking a longer drive each week or something?

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Change the oil more frequently. Once a month, take it for a 30 min drive, or longer.

    As great of advice as this is, and it made me chuckle, because I got a funny mental pic of someone doing this.

    Once a year give it the Seafoam treatment. Instructions are on the can. 1/3 can of sucked into engine through vacuum line, 1/3 of can into crank case, 1/3 can into gas tank. Do this when you have about 100-200 miles to go before you change your oil.

    I have the same issue too.
    My 2006 ran flawlessly for 5 yrs on short trips & as Chris said, I just changed the oil & made sure to give it longer trips every so often.
    Mine was exposed to extreme cold temps too so I bought a scangauge so I could watch the engine temp.
    It stayed very consistant though I did get the gunk build up under my oil cap in winter months. Summer time no gunk.
    I never treated the oil with anything and as said the truck ran like a top.
    I am going to do the same with my 2013.

    I agree with Chris. I'd take it on a nice, long drive at least once a month, probably more.

    glad to get some input on this since i only drive 1.5 miles to and from work... guess i need to make detours here and there!

    If you only drive 3-4 miles a day to work, ride a bike. It will make you feel good, save money, and save your engine from short trips! You should be able to walk 3 miles in under an hour, if not 35-45mins.

    thought about that but i work at an audio shop and i have to have my truck here for demo...

    I do not recomend using seafoam on newer vehicles, or ones under 150,000 miles. Using a quality fuel, and changing the oil as required/nessessary is more than enough.

    Keep in mind, the governement requires fuel companys to have a min. ammount of detergents, and cleaning addatives in the fuel now, so seafoam isnt really going to do much good.

    Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
    You still get deposits in the intake from EGR and PCV operation. Fuel detergency has no effect. It takes a solvent added into the intake to remove them.

    generally, the amount is very little on a propperly running, and maintained engine. If they start to develop issues, then yes, they need to be cleaned.
