How-To: Replace OEM Antenna (in-fender)

Disclaimer: This is how my antenna replacement worked for me and my 2007 SR5 4 cyl 4x4, your truck may vary! If in doubt, head to the dealer and ask for your specific diagram!

Hello! As I couldn't find any good pictures before I attempted this myself, I thought I would type them up to assist anyone else out there. What follows is how to replace your Antenna (the part in your fender) with a OEM replacement.

Here is what you will need:
-Part #

$66 86300-04070 Toyota Genuine Antenna Assembly with Hold

86300-04070 (a new antenna) (#1 below)
-Part #

$12 86396-04040 Antenna Nut

86396-04040 (a new screw down bezel nut) (#4 below)
-Part #

$28 86392-04040 Antenna Ornament

86392-04040 (a new bezel) (#3 below)
-Part # 90189-A0002 (grommet screw) (Only required if you break the clips when they come out of the fender well)
-Part # 75396-35020 (blue fender clip) (Only required if you break the blue clips when removing the fender flare)

(something that was pointed out to me; the antenna mast is the part above the fender, or part #2 below)







So when I noticed a nasty stain going down the side of my tacoma, I noticed this: Super corrosion and a loose antenna bezel!




Further investigation revealed the screw down bezel nut had corroded in place, making normal removal impossible. (At this point I had to drill out the bezel & bezel nut, but you might be able to unscrew yours)

When you get to this point drilling, stop!


Here's what a new antenna head should look like, and my old one


Our next step is to get the fastening plugs out of the fender in order to access the antenna. Here is what the plug looks like, so you know what you're dealing with.




This is the front passenger wheel well, remove your mud flap if present, and gently work out those plugs. You will have to pull up the fender flare, they are held on by 10 cent clips, just buy some new clips and get that flare out of your way. One the flare is out of the way, you can peel back the wheel well liner, and get to the antenna.


A "gotcha" screw that I didn't notice until I broke a clip or two is here, fully under the body, on the very edge of the fender.


Here is a shot of the retaining plugs out (you can see the holes where they connect to the fender) and the bottom of the antenna. The wiring goes into your cabin at that rubber plug. You will need to take out that screw to remove the mast, but don't pull on the wires just yet! Don't worry about the rubber plug where the wires go into your cabin, your OEM replacement should have one attached already.


Remove your glove box, the sides flex allowing you to slip the retaining stud out, and take out the screw holding up the trim piece (and remove said trim piece) here:


Remove the trim piece covering your front pillar by prying up the pieces covering these bolts, then removing the bolts in question.


Here is the trim piece coming away, and you can see the wiring that your antenna connects to (part #5 in the 1st diagram) coming out from the dash area. there is a detaching connector in the wiring that our replacement will plug into.


Here (center, out of focus, sorry!) is where the wiring enters your cabin, seen from the glove box area. Also out of focus is a retaining clip connected to the mast's wiring that you will have to remove.


There is a second identical clip on the mast's wiring, before the detaching connector, here by where the pillar cover touches the dash area. On mine I had to cut it, allowing part of the clip to fall into the body... ugh.


Now that the 2 clips are out, remove the old mast and put the new one into the hole in your fender, using the hook, attach the bottom screw, run the wire into your cabin, and attach the clips & connector!




Now add your new bezel and screw down the bezel nut.


I used this watch tool, a couple bucks at walmart, to both pry up all retaining clips and to tighten the bezel.




Button up your wheel well & fender and you're done! You just saved yourself about $200 in labor

The only thing I have run into is that I can't get the stain from the corrosion off of my truck! Let me know if you have any thoughts!

Perfect timing, i have the new mast sitting in the garage waiting to go on. I wasted $40 on the specialty tool (had to buy the whole set) to remove the mast nut. It did not work. It is so corroded, nothing would budge it.

 

Sounds like exactly what happened to my bezel, you might have to drill it out. I used a 1/2 inch bit just because it was very close to the same diameter as said bezel. Happily the bit is also larger than the mast head, that way I was sure to cut away the corroded boot from the mast.

 

I also took this as an opportunity to replace the antenna with the $10 stubby from pep boys; lost a little reception, but stopped hitting the garage door!

The paranoid side of me thinks hitting things with the antenna helped corrode the mast by introducing cracks, but I might be

 

Well I have broken 2 antennas 2 different ways...

The first time the automatic car wash took it out.

The second time I was going to outsmart the car wash and remove the antenna before I went through. I put a wrench on it and the slightest amount of pressure snapped it!

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

So now I've been without an antenna for about 8 months. I didn't have the time, tools, or space to mess with it.

I will definitely going back with an aftermarket stubby antenna.

nice write up, you can also use a pair of needle nose pliers to fit in the 2 grooves to unscrew the bezel off and on

 

Nice write up. What caused all that corrosion?

 

I had a similar thought, but mine were too thick in the tips to fit. Lucky I had the watch tool laying around!

 

I couldn't say for sure, but I think something hit the antenna, because I noticed it was canted to the passenger side compared to the new mast fitment. On the other hand, I have been living on a barrier island next to the ocean for a few years...

This is excellent....too bad it wasn't here a few months ago when I swapped fenders when I bought a snorkel. Had to cut the antenna on both trucks. I am not sure what he has done, but I bought all new parts to replace mine. I was also sent an extra mast nut if anyone needs it.

Is there a part number for these fender clips?

 

Could it be the "Retainer 2005-11, fender liner Right" (part#6) as seen here: http://parts.camelbacktoyota.com/pa...teid=214329&vehicleid=1445515&diagram=8512010 I know it shows up in the bumper cover area, but when I search for fender liner, I get the same product cross referenced.

I am looking for the same thing. I snapped my shorty antenna mast off at the bottom where it screws in to the antenna base. It didn't sit flush so water got in there and rusted it out. I wanted to get a few extra of these clips in case I break any.

 

I will be going to the dealer soon for the seat belt recall, and will get a verified number!

 

If anyone is worried about future corrosion, might I suggest a little dielectric grease? Youd be surprised how useful it can be. We use it on the 2 way antenna tips when we tune them to the radios for the heavy equipment. Really stops the ends from corroding so Im sure it will help with the Tacos antenna. Im about to replace my FM antenna on my Aacoma so this thread is a great help, and I knoe i'll be greasing up the joints!
