TRD E-locker and ATRAC vs SR5 w/air lockers

For the OP:

Front and rear lockers is the best traction set up, period. Also, you end up with a stronger rear diff from factory with the SR5.

If you plan to wheel it good, go ahead with the base or SR5 and ARB it. Better to save the money on the front end, because most of the OR package will end up getting removed and replaced (only items I have left from my OR package are the rear locker and electronic woo-dads - suspension, stickers, etc. are all gone).

too bad you can't finance the ARBs like you can ATRAC.

That's why I bought a year old truck that already had a nice suspension, wheels, tires installed. Didnt have to come out of pocket with $6k.

 

How do you guys know the rear ends and axles are tougher on the SR5's? That is what I got but really had no idea they were any different. I figured the exact same as the OR just minus the locker. What pieces are stronger on the cheaper truck? That just seems odd to me.

 

Sort. There are two main suspects:

Bearing caps and trusses on the "8.4" diffs are bigger.

The ring gears in the e-locked diffs have a more aggressive bevel to them than the non-locked diffs. This means less material in the body of the gear to dissipate force.

Also, lockers tend to be stressful.

Mine is an SR5 regeared to 4.56 and ARB'd at both ends. Works for me. I also replaced all the suspension, and I would have done that with the TRD as well. I never considered a TRD when I was looking.

 

So what I have gathered from reading this whole thread is that if I put some lockers on my new 2013 SR5 Prerunner and throw on a nice suspension I'm ready to rock?

 

I'd armour it up so you don't smash the shit out of your under carriage but yes. More or less.

 

I already have the stock skid plate, is that good enough for moderate stuff?
