and i hope im not getting off topic, but what purpose does that button serve other than that time i used it to limp my old truck with an ignition gremlin out of a river-bed with starter-power?

According to toyota, it is for starting in gear (in 4lo) in mud, sand, steep grade... And NOT for starting the engine from outside the truck to warm it up. I won't admit to doing that...

I'd use it in that riverbed situation too.

OP, completely dead battery will not run the fuel pump power up the alternator or make spark. If you got a hint of it trying to crank maybe but if it's dead you can pushing for miles before you have to call a tow truck or borrow jumper cables.

Fog lights are aftermarket, so I'll probably have to put in a relay, right? I know there's a mod on here for it, just haven't looked it up yet.

So, battery is completely toast now...I knew I should've driven to Autozone after I jumped it, but at least it's safe in my driveway and not down the street.

    You are switching them directly?

Here's a sample diagram that uses the stock 2nd Gen dash switch, or the FJ Cruiser switch, but the basic diagram would be similar for an aftermarket switch.

Basically, pins 3, 4, and 6 mimic an auto parts store lighted switch.

Somewhat related, when the clutch slave cyl. blew in my '83 hilux with the 22r while out 'wheeling in the boonies years back, I naturally drove it all the way home (1/2 hour and a couple dozen stops) by starting it in gear, and shifting without the clutch. Maybe not the best for the starter or the synchros, but that beast did take off the line faster on the starter than the 22r could do.:p Denso gear drive starters are pretty bomb proof anyway, I have yet to see a failure on one other than soleniod contacts or abuse related, such as being submerged.

Just for future reference of other's, turns out my problem was a double wammy. Drained battery from fog lights plus loose/stripped-out bolt that holds the alternator wire to the battery... Spent an hour at Advanced Auto to find that out...
