I have managed to save up a few $ and would love to get rid of the stock stereo and replace it with a double din unit. I would bring it to a shop to have them do the work, but I would like to go in knowing exactly what I want done.

My question is, what can/cant be done? I already have XM radio (and the stock antenna), bluetooth, and steering wheel controls (all stock from the factory). I would like to keep all of those operable, especially the XM (using the stock antenna already on the roof). Additionally, I had Toyota install the remote start / alarm, but this should be an issue.

Ideally, I would like a touch screen type unit capable of displaying full XM program info (song names, sports scores etc, basically of the things the standard display cuts off), cd player that can play MP3 cds, something I can connect my iphone to, and if I can GPS (just something nice to have, but not needed).

I assume the first thing I need to get (or have them get) is the new double din plate for the dash. Is this something I should buy, or leave it up to them?

Please give me as much info as you can (links to parts are even better), including what, if any, adapters are needed. All your help is greatly appreciated.

I am by far not an expert, been out of the stereo field for too many years now and it's evolved leaps and bounds.

That being said, I know pioneer makes an all-in-one unit, several in fact. Used to be called AVIC-Z1, if I remember. It had navigation, touch screen, would display phone info and everything on the display. It had several auxillary inputs as well and was a double din unit.

As far as keeping the steering controls that usually isn't an issue, many manufacturers have solutions to keeping the factory control systems.

I think something along those lines would be what you would want, they were expensive, $800 I think? It's been years, sorry.

As far as what to get I would leave that up to the shop. While you can possibly source your own parts, it really sits sours with most installers and many just won't install other peoples equipment. 2 reasons: 1. it obviously cuts into their profit. 2. If something goes bad WHO'S fault is it?

IMHO it is worth the warranty to pay the extra $50 or whatever. Also any reputable shop will be happy for you to inspect their work before paying and most will be happy to show off examples of their work up front so you can see the quality. If you are really picky ask them not to close up the dash until you inspect their wiring, it should be clean using bellcaps or but-connectors of the correct size. They should not have to cut into the factory wiring, and should use the correct adapter (in most cases). Any modifications should be done to the adapter harness and not your original wiring.

Hope I helped in some way.

great advice, i appreciate it. Having the shop do the install isnt my concern. My main concern is them not knowing what they will need, or telling me they cant do something when it can be done, they just dont know how.

SWI-JACK (good for most steroes, but they have variations of the product for just about anything) keeps your steering wheel controls working.

I would suggest checking reviews on your local neighborhood installers....most shops will know the parts you need and are looking for. Whatever you do...don't go to the big box stores that have installation departments..they will hack your truck up.

Ok not trying to be a jerk here BUT I have heard this a lot.

So let me ask you this? When I buy something on the internet where do you think it is stored? In some sort of skybox or airbox? No it is stored in a brick and mortar building. Sure it is not a retail location that you can walk into and buy something. But it is still a building.

Now as to the OVER HEAD COST. Lets see you have lights and they have lights. They have employees and you have employees.

Sorry but I just don't get the whole brick and mortar mentality.

And by the way I do own my own business.

Brick and mortar...you need registers, inventory on the floor and out back, don't forget about display inventory that is instantly worth less than msrp...you have health benefits, payroll taxes for full time...also if you think about the logic of it...a store 50 ft off the major Rt. in your local city or a warehouse with no storefront 10 miles from the interstate in an industrial park...One of them is going to cost more per sq/ft...

I try to support local when I can..I will even pay more for american made...but the options are running out.

well if everyone ordered stuff from the internet and not from a retail store there would be no need for jobs like mine in a locally started and run buisness.. in return more people un-employed.. not to mention since shopping on the internet has blown up our buisness has taken a big blow... we have had to fire people (now un-employed) and down size because there is a lot less money coming through! but as there is less money coming in and taxes on buisnesses keep getting higher and higher.. you do the math! less money and more taxes = more people without jobs and buisnesses going under.. now the internet doesnt effect everyones job but it does hurt a lot of peoples!
and as far as OVER HEAD COST. lets see...
    -un-employment gets higher each year
-federal and state taxes get higher ever year
-bills-water electric too heat the main building and the car bay
-insurance on the buisness (to cover product in the store if it is broken into) also insurance on the bay is seperate( to cover cars we work on)
    -workers comp.
    -pay-roll taxes
and so on and so forth.. with taxes getting higher and not slowing down and there is less money coming in due to internet sales... and yes i do realize the economy is down but i have people everyday come in and waste my time just to buy things online..

im still waiting on an answer from my rep. but i should have an answer today.. sorry it is taking so long..

Retail brick and mortar equals alot more employees...
Internet companies have warehouses with more automation.

As stated before, the retail spot costs A LOT more per square foot to rent, what was left out was that I could do $300M in business from one warehouse, but that same $300m might cost me 20 retail locations, each with a manager and complete payroll of its own. Each with it's own rent payment, each with it's own utilities...ect ect.

    Do you get it now?

should be the same in the 2011 as the post i found was posted in 2008 i think im honestly not 100% since i do not have a 2011.. but you can try and look in the kick and see if the sat connector is in there like in the picture.. sometimes people wont update years it will work so you might have to call the company about the connector and see if they know if it will in fact work in the 2011..
