Sorry, I just can't resist this one...first thought that came to mind.

If your engine is rapping when cold, try listening to country instead. It might just mellow out and run quieter and smoother. However be prepared for water coming out at the headlights as your truck cries.

Not to mention the free 4WD upgrade for prerunners!

The rapatap noise is worst on my truck after the engine has been warmed up and then let sit to cool for half an hour or so and restarted; from 1500 to 2000 rpm it's pretty annoyingly loud then for about 30 seconds. Any other time I usually don't even notice it.

I have a 1 week old 2013 Tacoma dbl cab TRD with 300 miles making the same noise upon starting up on a cold morning. Must be the nature of the beast!

Wife noticed a noise today... I heard it with the passenger door open.
It was the smog pump. Noise stopped just as the engine idled down.

Well, it must have been the normal new engine sounds, according to what I've read from others. The truck now has just under 5000 miles and I haven't heard the sound for quite some time now, and the temps have been below 20* on most mornings around here.
