I am purchasing a 2013 DC Prerunner V6 7190 TRD Sport (auto tranny) from an out of state dealership. The ride home will be 1000 miles. I asked the salesperson for input. He stated for the first 1000 miles to NOT drive at one speed the entrie time, to make stops, and vary my highway speeds. Also not to tow anything for 5000 miles.

He stated the V6 motor actually adjusts itself to my style of driving and that if I dont vary the speeds in the beginning, it would take about 3 months to actually adjust to my driving habits.

Should I change the oil when I get home? At what point can I start using synthetics in the engine?

Any thoughts, experience or input on this would be appreciated - thanks!

You'll be fine, they tell you not to tow so you don't warp your breaks. The engine 'break in' on these trucks is done before the truck is delivered. Swap to synthetic oil when you want, it won't hurt anything.

You will be fine driving that far on a new vehicle. Why not buy local or have the truck shipped to your location?

If at all possible it's best to buy at whatever dealer you will be servicing with. They will like you a whole lot better, read take better care of you, if you buy from them. Even if it costs a little more it will be worth it in the long run. JMHO

Local dealers promised they could get this vehicle in, but in all actuallity, there were none available in the southeastern & gulf states. I was looking for a super white 7190 long bed with trd & tow. None of the 10 lower states had one and it was going to take 8-12 weeks to get one in. (can wait that long) Found one in MO and they made me a great deal. $120 plane ticket & $200 gas and it will be in my garage in 5 days. They will even pick me up from the airport.

The local guys pissed me off quite a bit with the usual BS. But not all are bad as I talked to quite a few out of state who were very cool and offered to help!

Sold my tundra, so have been thumbing to work for 2 weeks (yes that sucks too)

I am stoked to get the new ride HOME!! :)

I'd find a different dealer if they treat you different because you buy your vehicle somewhere else. Dealers make most their money in service. So you should demand great service wether you bought one there or not. I was fortunate that the dealer I work with treats me awesome, (even installed my lift for me and did the rear spring recall at the same time) and I didn't buy anything from them.

When you get home, just disconnect your batter and then reconnect it. It will then readjust to your driving habits after you start driving it. It won't take 3 months to readjust.

I'm not a toyota tech and I can't tell you this for sure, but I've noticed that every time I disconnect my battery, when I reconnect it the truck seems to have forgotten my driving habits and relearns it.

Congrats on the new Tacoma. I can identify with you on the out of state purchase. Bought my 09 hyundai elantra touring in illinois because the locals (minimum 60 miles away) werent interested in meeting my price, or getting what I wanted. Out of state dealer had what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay and then gave me an addiyional 120 off the agree upon price for gas home! Yea, Rosen Hyundai in Algonquin, IL!

My local Hyundai dealer even though they didn't want to sell me this vehicle has been great with the one problem I've had with a pull to the right and I will give them a call if or when the wife needs something new but I won't buy if they aren't competitive or settle for something I don't want just because they are local. Giving you crappy service on your vehicle is just another reason not to darken their doorstep for future purchases.

Don't be concerned about driving it home, vary your speed, enjoy the ride! Take some long breaks park it were your can gaze upon it and bask in the glow!

If it were mine, I'd change the oil and filter when I got home but that's just a feel good thing for me.

I agree with ya 100% . The local dealers round my way make me sick , treat you n act like we are stupid kids. I drove to a dealer 200 miles away, treated me great aside from the warranty lady, crook. Overall if I'm gonna spend my money wanna be treated as such. In my area always some bullshit angle with everything. At the far dealer been there 4 times since, several emails n calls after the sale always gave me the attention I feel us as customers deserve

I find most of these Florida sales people don't even know they are indeed Southeast Toyota, and that our models are region specific.

Putting 500-1000 miles before towing is more for rear axle break-in.

I had a similar situation, ended up buying from a dealer 700 miles away, but not same Toyota region, and local dealers claimed they couldn't/wouldn't do a trade/swap/buy with an out of region dealership.

Flew to Charlotte, NC and mostly took 2 lane roads home, that and making use of the 6 speed varied rpm for break-in. Even drove the "Tail of the Dragon" - 318 curves in 11 miles - great drive.

Just drive it. They give you a warranty. The way you drive does not really matter IMO. It is a machine. It has no idea how you drive. As stated it is broke in by the time it hits the lot.

Piston rings will be broken in prior to the vehicle leaving the factory - you have nothing to worry about. Let it decelerate in gear a few times above 4k rpm on a fresh motor and you'll be fine - but chances are, Toyota has already taken care of that for you.

Had similar issue in 2010, wanted a DC w/Manual, TRD OFF ROAD and TOW. DCs w/Manuals are only available in certain regions. Michigan is not one of them. Dealership said could dealer trade, but no negotiation on price, just wave transpo fee. Dealership in Massachusetts (one of the regions) was $300.00 below invoice, so I saved a few thousand. Flew there, visited family, bought truck (ordered from factory to my specs) and drove home to Michigan. No problems, still running strong and just went over 30,000.

Here are just a few quotes from local dealers!
    1. You can’t get the TRD package on a long bed.
    2. The TRD only comes on short bed 4x4’s.
    3. We can have it in 2 days.
    4. The manager from the other dealership has not called us back about trading. (3 days)
    5. We need $500 down to start looking for the vehicle.
    6. I am only making a $100 mini on this sale.
    7. I have 5 kids I’m trying to feed.

    * I called SET southeastern toyota and told the person what I was looking for. I even gave her the VIN number from their website. She quaranteed me it was at my local dealership, even after questioning her multiple times! . My wife and I drove there and thats when the fun began. NO truck on lot! WTF!!

Can you see why I walked after all the BS!!! J

You will be fine, its a new truck, watch your engine temp, drive it easy and enjoy.

I bought a 1972 FJ55 Landcruiser in Arizona and flew there to pick it up. Brought some tools and drove it home. Went camping and fishing in the Sierras right away.

    Have fun man.
