Hey guys, so im planning a road trip from WA through the MID West and wanted to ask for your help. ive been doing research and cant seem to find any businesses that rent out in bed campers. im not plannign on doing a trialer since it woudl be too expensive and secondly still want to have flexibility with where i park. does anyone know agood place i can rent out a in bed camper for a good price for a Taco 2011 double cab?:)

With a 500lb payload capacity in the bed, and the stock Taco leaf springs, I would never even think of putting one of those on my truck. And if you have a short bed, fuhhgettaboutit.

instead of a full hard top slide in camper, i would look for a pop up slide in camper, just to shed some pounds. but you will need to install new springs or air bags unless you like riding on bump stops.

as far as rentals, the only one i found on a very quick google search was in Anchorage, Alaska.

I had one for my 1998. Due to the plastic beds, I don't believe they recommend them for 2nd Gens, except for the very light weight ones, like Four Wheel Campers. You also have to beef-up the suspension and drill into the frame to mount. Never heard of slide-in rentals. Good luck!

Cheaper alternative - purchase a $50 tent and camp on the ground instead!

500lbs? I thought they were rated between 1300-1450lbs (varies between options, drivetrains, etc.)

I just picked this up. But haven't loaded it yet. According to the manfacturer it weighs 910 empty. Needless to say I will be putting some Firestone Ride-Rites on.

You don't want it the way it now, trust me. LOL That thing is hanging by 2 bolts now and is bent and scraped to all hell. I harpooned it to a fence and got pulled out by my buddy's Taco, bending the absolute shit out of it.

But hey, if you wanna pay the shipping it's yours for free :D

I agree with "you get what you pay for" to a certain extent. A couple $50 tents from Amazon served us just fine on a 2week camping trip to Yellowstone this past summer. If I were to camp all the time I'd probably go for something more expensive, but in the OP's case it's an item that gets used a few weeks out of the year.
