    They're both OEM.
The 20004 is what is installed at the factory.
The element and bypass valve are a completely different construction.

No opinion. They're both good. The -YZZD3 is a more conventional construction.

Yeah, that's what came on my truck. Any idea why they install from the factory a filter that's hard to locate, yet sell the YZZD3 at the dealerships?

There has been a lot of speculation that the 20004 is a "break in" filter and has a higher bypass pressure. Finer filtration to catch finer particles, coupled with a higher bypass pressure to force the pump to run the oil through the element.

But that's speculation... The 20004 is made in Japan, and the YZZD3 is made in Taiwan. The only way we can know is if someone has a friend in Japan and checks to see what their dealer installed during service.

I gotcha. I guess I'll discontinue the search for the fabled filter and buy what the dealer stocks, since it sounds as though it's pretty decent. Thank you.

I bought my 02' Tacoma V6 Extra cab 5 speed with 24k. after I bougth it I switched to Mobile 1 full sythetic and used the standard Toyota oil filter. I learned that the Toyota Filter has a valve that keeps some of your oil on top of your engine to reduce dry start after your shut off the motor. I eneded up trying the TRD filter and it does work better as it has bigger ports alowwing the oil flow easier. I over do it when it comes to oil changes, every 2,000 miles I change it.

That is a complete waste of perfectly good oil and resources.

    +1

Even 3000 is "recreational oil changing"

No auto manufacturer has recommended change intervals at less than 5000 in over 20 years.

I worked in a filter manufacturing plant for 9yrs. We made Fram, Pensoil, Car Quest, Purolator, Bosch ect. ect. I drove A toyota when I worked there. Took one of my old filters in and cut it open, because everyone always said don't put anything but toy filters on it. When I cut it open it wasn't any different than the ones we were making. The only difference was the type of paper and the #of pleats in the filter element. Believe it or not Pensoil used the best, thickest, and highest # of pleats in it's filter than any of the rest. That being said it is pretty much personal preference. The guts inside of them are almost identical. That retainer valve toy filters talk about the was used on the 22r and 22re to hold the oil in so you wouldn't have a dry engine start up is put in every filter. Just saying
