So the Maint Req'd light is on steady, and we know it's because an oil change is overdue.

I just bought a Maxiscan MS300 & wanted to make sure it works by retrieving the code.

Communicates w/the Tacoma fine, but says "No Codes".

Is this normal when the light is a nag light for an oil change?

Or should there be an actual alphanumeric code?

Sorry if the answer is here somewhere -- I looked around but don't see it...

    Thanks.

Oil reminder light isn't tied into the system. It comes on after a certain mileage. You can reset it by holding down the trip button on either the odo setting or the trip a. and turn the key. I forget the exact process, but you could google it

Thanks -- I saw the reset procedure. I'm really just trying to see if the DTC code-reader I just bought is functioning normally. I take it (since oil reminder light isn't tied into the system) that the "No Codes" reading is appropriate in this case?

    Ditto.
CEL is from codes, you have no codes.
Maint Reqd just triggers every 5000 miles (starts flashing for a few seconds at engine startup at 4500).

To reset, toggle the odometer to the "ODO" position, turn the truck off, depress the ODO reset button, turn the key on (don't start), and continue to hold the button until the display toggles between 000000 and ------
Once the "1's" digit changes, it's done.

To test the code reader, leave the cas cap off until the CEL light comes on, then read the codes.

Sorry -- don't have the manual handy.

I take it the 09 Tacoma has both a CEL and a separate Maint-Reqd light?

EVERY vehicle (equipped with one) has a separate indicator for CEL and oil changes.
