Does anyone know how to remove the slotted black piece of plastic that's in between the hood and windshield? It's the piece with the wipers coming out of it. I want to remove it so I can paint it since mine is really faded. My only concern is how to take it off so it can easily be put back on and I also have no clue how to completely remove the windshield wipers and that seems necessary to remove this plastic piece. Any help is appreciated.

It's called a cowl (just fyi in case you want to google search)

Remove the little caps at the base of the wipers. One bolt holds each wiper on. Then, if it's anything like my 98 it's just a couple screws and a few plastic clips to remove the cowl.

Thanks. I'll probably Google it but I had no clue what the name for it was. I saw the screws to remove the cowl but removing the wipers was the only complication I saw. Thanks a lot once again!

Just did this today. There's one 14mm bolt for each windshield wiper, unscrew those and pull the wipers off. After that unscrew the 6 screws that are holding that cowl in. Then pop the hood and take out the 4 plastic pieces (screws) holding in the weather stripping. Once all this is done then wiggle the cowl on out and there you have it

So far it seems like it would be pretty easy to do. Hopefully when Spring Break rolls around I'll have time to work on it. It really needs to be painted because taking my truck through some pretty nice mudholes has stained the cowl a lighter, dirty color and no "back to black" product seems to have done any good. Thanks for the input.

That's UV oxidation of the plastic.

See my before and after pictures:

Jrh95 what was it you used to bring that out from the oxidation?
