Anyone know if I can directly swap a rear axle from a toyota pickup, and put it into a 1997 Tacoma?

Depends on the year. I have a 94 Toyota truck axle on my 95.5 Tacoma. I would assume it would work as long as it's not from the smaller Toyota trucks from the 80's.

I can tell you the Pre-Taco's didn't have a BPV, so you'll have to modify it with brackets for it, and likely brackets for parking brake lines, too.

    Will it bolt in? Yes.

Will it be too narrow with a different pinion flange pattern, most likely different gear ratio, and not have a the proper brackets for brake lines and parking brake lines.. Yes. All of the above.
