Nail in my new tire :(

Plug it if it leaks, cheap fix, and if you do it right, will last years. I have plugged many tires myself, the only one that I could not get to seal was a tire punctured by a very large rock (hole was about 5/8 inch diameter).

In the old days, I was a very cheap person. Had a screw stuck in my tire that was leaking, screwed it in farther, it stopped leaking. I drove it that way for years. The first couple of months, I had an annoying ticking sound, but it finally wore down.

That looks far enough in that a shop would probably plug it if you don't feel comfortable doing it.

 

What's the worst that could happen? You can always swap on the spare tire, right?

 

This is why I always buy the $40-80 tire warranty thing. Yay if you never need to use it but even more yay when you do need it.

 

Once in 2007 I paid $100 for road hazard warranty a shop, equal to 25% (!) of the cost of the tires. I broke even a year later, when one of the tire developed an air bubble between sidewall plies.

 

I know pretty much every scenario has been covered, but i'd be surprised if that went all the way through cause your tread looks AWESOME! I had one in the same spot, took it to pepboys to patch for free cause the free tire fix with member card, and they said they couldn't fix it, cause it was outside the last channel, I pulled the nail out myself, no leak!

 

Couple drops of dish detergent mixed into a couple ounces of water.
Pour a little on the nail and surrounding area.
If no bubbles, go away and come back in ten minutes.
If you have bubbles, go to a tire shop.
If no bubbles (and you have a spare), yank the nail and add more soap/water.
If no bubbles and the nail was short, you're good.
Can't plug a non-hole.

Is it leaking air? No sense in getting all anxious about something that might not even be.

 

I've had a slow leak in one of my OEM tires for about a year now. I guess I should get it plugged and patched to stop the "low tire pressure" light from annoying me.

 

I had nail in same location and dealer wouldn't patch said was too close to sidewall.. but luckily when they went to pull nail it hadn't gone all the way through...

 

Take it to a small time tire shop, they will fix it for a price. Should be like $10-$15 for a patch. The big companies will reject it due to liability but other small shops will fix it.

 

The dealer doesn't warranty the tires. The tire Manufacturer does.

 

Here in Maine if the inspection station finds a plug in a tire it won't pass inspection. Patch from the inside is OK. (and better)
