I believe it may have been the corroded crossmember and the possibility of the spare tire falling into the road for others to hit that got the outside agency to take a close look at the frames on Toyotas last time.

This is a time bomb for Toyota, they likely know it, and wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a plan prepared or ironing out details on.

Toyota would be so much better off to implement a mandatory frame spray for all trucks sold every two years. Gives them good faith with customers, lets inspection be accomplished, prevents these concerns, and if priced properly they would suffer no losses financially.

So we as customers would pay a small say $50 fee to have the truck frame corrosion proofed every 2 years. If that is not accomplished and logged, frame warranty is void. Sort of like spark plug replacements...the book states plugs must be replaced to have warranty on the emissions systems.

BTW, the other post linked to has been here for a few months...these two and the unknowns are the tip of the iceberg that Toyota is headed for.

Not to be the devil's advocate ,but when was the last time he looked under the truck? This doesn't happen over night, if he would of caught it alot earlier ,maybe Toyota could of work with him. Frame rust is a problem with these trucks, the earlier models the beds would rot off, I had a '81 the bed rotted off in '89, I cleaned it and painted it twice ,it still died. Now on my '07 I rust treat and paint every spot Asap.my .02

Well, with the ongoing drought, no winter salting and it being a prerunner and not seeing much other than dusty offroad action, not thinking this will become an issue on mine. It is still all black under there. I do look at all the stuff under there, every time the oil is changed at very least. Still sucks tho. My 82 that had half a million miles and no rustproofing or undercoating was nowhere near the bad shape these failure frames are in either. The frame is not the place to cheap out on on a truck. The 82 got better gas mileage with real frame and smaller 4 cyl too.....even at 500k. Good luck to all those with issues. The best option for awhile would seem to be scoring a frame from junkyard if you can find a suitable one and swapping it over.

rustproofing made by Toyota does not work at all. All they do is get few cans of rustproofing and their tech sprays all lover the bottom of truck.
    Cost... $300
Its complete BS. Once truck is "rustproofed" liek that you will never be able to clean and paint the frame so Your truck will always look like $hit.
Frame is rusting in places where we can not rust proof. Thats the problem. With out taking truck apart pulling frame out and sanding and rust proving then rewelding none of the usual trick are goig nto work but its gettign warmer so I think I have new trick in my sleeve.

I will agree with most of it, but the main issue is in the boxed section of frame.

When you figure out how to get a paint brush in between pieces of laminated steel in a boxed frame without dipping it let us all know. $0.02

My question is when the hell will Toyota learn that they need to properly do their frames? They have had this problem for over 30 years now, is it that hard for such a massive corporation to fix this?

    @BlueT

I agree that Toyota rustproofing is a joke. They need to step it up and fog the entire frame exterior and interior with a better product that is a penetrating and inhibiting compound. With minimal effort and investment this is easily done.

My truck has the oem rustproofing. Regardless, after seeing the other topic and that guys frame corrosion, and doing some research, it convinced me to start using a high quality corrosion spray on the frames interior box sections, and all the doublers. It may not be perfect but should help.

This is what I am using to coat the inside box sections, doubler edges and joints, plus the exterior in most places.

    Waste or worthwhile.

    Won't help the op though.

Lucky for you, you are in Florida so pretty much even with out rust proofing you should be fine.
Thanks to higher temps your frame will stay dry inside.
Product looks good but on the end none of them really matter. Simply there is no way to reach in between sheets of metal which compose frame.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
I've not noticed any frame rust, but I did not notice quite a bit on the backside of the rear bumper (cover) last night. Mostly surface rust now, but who knows how much longer until it eats through.

Do I get a consolation prize!:)

Thats a bummer....no doubt. I'm thinking about shooting some waxoyl on my frame.Looks like good stuff from what I've read. Need special applicators and techniques, but seems like it might be a good investment.
