not as old school as me, i change mine every 3500 miles, and i use mobil 1. but i use my truck harder than most people with wheelin and towin. i change it regardless every 6 months because i believe that the paper filaments in the filter begin to fall apart by then.

either mobil 1 or castrol are good...i've used both....i guess on my new tacoma i'll use whatever the dealer uses...not sure if they use mobil 1 or castrol....but i will go full synthetic....i don't even know why they still make regular oil anymore...i know mobil 1 only has full synthetic

I ran Mobil 1 exclusively, except for initial break-in, on my last vehicle. At 165,000 miles on the DOHC Chrysler 2.0 engine, it is mechanically sound with good even compression and good oil analysis results. (I expected to drive it at least another 50,000 to 100,000 miles as a daily driver before retiring it to weekend autocross duty exclusively. Were it not for a deer inopportunely jumping in front of me on the highway...)

During the warranty period I changed it on warranty schedule. After the extended warranty (75k), I began extending the OCI and sending samples in to test. I tested at about 10,000 miles, and the oil was in great shape with no significant contaminents, so I kept changing it every 10-15,000 miles. This was with lots of highway miles.

The difference between 0-30 and 5-30 is how thin the oil is at start up. At normal operating temps the two oils are the same. I've been told the 0-30 is better for your engine at start up, because it flows better at the time where most engine wear takes place.

Just had the first oil change in the truck and went with full synthetic. used full snthetic in my last truck and changed every 9 to 10k miles. guess I'll stick with every 5k for warranty purposes, seems like a waist of good oil though because it takes a long time to break down, the filter probably affects how long before changing it more so than the oil itself.

I'll start looking for good deals on mobil or penzoil platinum and get a drain plug to help with the changes, maybe get my oil filters at the dealership

I have read that it is not good to switch over to synthetic oil in a high mileage vehicle that has only had conventional oil in it

If you "properly" used dino oils during the life of the vehicle and did not do extended drain intervals or overheated the engine, switching to synthetic type oils really do no harm on high mileage engines.

Main problems arise when the engine was abused on dino and heavy varnish and sludge has built up around seal bearing surfaces, thereby acting as a barrier or dam for a worn seal. Then you come along with a quality synthetic that dissolves these heavy deposits and then you have leaks.

Many people have switch to synthetics on 100K plus cars with no ill effects, so long as the car was properly maintained on the dino juice.

    ^ that makes sense

there are always lazy people that are in the process of getting their conventional oil changed and go way over the 3k oil change time period with every oil change, I'm sure they would not be good candidates for getting synthetic in their vehicle when it has lots of miles on it.

Then there are those who meticulously change the conventional oil every 3k and keep logs of every change and every little thing that happens to the truck over time. They would be candidates for switching over to synthetic without any problems maybe

alright so i'm at about about 50,000 miles and have been fairly okay to my engine, no overheating and for the most part always change oil anywhere between 3000-5000 miles. not meticulously, but i do my best.

    you think i'll be ok?

you should be fine to switch over to synthetic. lots of people change the conventional oil every 3k miles but Toyota recommends every 5k for changes so even if you went every 5k between changes it would still be ok. If you had 150k or 200k on your vehicle I would not recommend changing over to synthetic oil, but I am only going by what I have heard about problems with switching to synthetic in high mileage vehicles

You will be fine on dino juice. I have seen many Toyota's go 300K+ miles on dino juice. Dino oils are far more advance than they were 10-15 years ago and many can push 7.5K change intervals depending on the application. 5K change intervals are just fine.

Unless the manual calls out a specific need for a synthetic or you want to go to a longer change interval, there is not much need for a synthetic.

Most of the current leading brand synthetics to include Mobil 1, start out from using Dino base stocks the same as conventional oils. They just hydrocrack the dino base stock different for sythetics and the additive packs are taylored different. To get a 'true" synthetic oil, you have to go with some boutique brand like AMSOIL or Royal Purple.

Main thing to long engine life with oils is just following a common sense change interval of 3K-5K, proper weight and looking on label to make sure it meets the API/ILSAC spec. Brand is almost unimportant,

Im using Royal Purple with the K&N Oil filter. Hoping the K&N wont dump oil everywhere for the next change. Thinking of putting RP gear oil in the rear too
