And now for the next puzzling sound...

2009 Access cab, V6, 4x4, TRD, SR5. Have never heard this sound from any of the other 5 Toyota trucks I've owned over the years.

Any time I stop and reverse direction there is a single, loud, metallic "TINK !!!" sound that comes from both front brakes the first time they are applied after truck starts moving in new direction.

Inspected brakes and they are at about 50%.

Any of you experienced this and if so can you tell me what it is , the cause, and the remedy ?

Mine do the same thing after changing my brake pads. The pads are loose, and can move up and down (or rotate) freely.

I don't know the remedy, but it's really starting to piss me off.

Mine did this too for awhile, the pads are shifting back and forth. After I changed my pads the sound went away. I'm using Hawk LTS pads now.

After watching your video - that's the same sound. Mine is still on the original pads. Did yours do it on the original pads?

Maybe someone will have the remedy that relieves both of our annoyances -

Because it pisses me off too !!

Sounds like the front brakes are F'd up!

No, these are the first pads to do this. I always buy the cheapest pads at Oriely's.

oh wow... so thats what that sound is. my truck started to make that sound last summer. i thought it might have been something in the suspension, but this description is spot on.

    yes, it is really annoying.

i am at 40k miles on the original brakes so i might be replacing them this year. hopefully new pads will kill the sound.

Once again, you guys have eased my mind that a strange sound turns out to be normal. Still annoying but guess I can live with it until the brake pads are almost done.

    Thanks for the info !

    Floating brake pads...completely normal.

    This might help with noises...

My factory pads did this, but as soon as I got some PosiQuiet pads, it stopped.

Mine are greased up and still make the noise. I wonder if there is some type of shim to stop them form moving?

My Mustang used to do this. Drove me nuts because the pads were fairly new and OEM. When I pulled the pads I found the backer plate that was riveted to the pad had broken loose on one end and was acting like a spring.

Also - always use the shims that are provided with the pads - or else you'll get noise and vibration when stopping.
