Will this work?? I have a 4 pole connector for my hitch and I want to buy this adapter but not Hook up the other 3 connectors since I have no use for them. I just want the connector since it is more rugged and easier to connect. If I plug in a 5, 6 or 7 pole connector will it still work with only four?

    Hope you understand.

It'll work but since you're only wired for a 4-pin trailer, the trailers you'll be towing will also have flat 4 connectors so I don't see the point in running a dumbed down 7-pin. The reason there are 7-pins is because those other 3 wires have functions assocaited with them. If you only have 4 of them hooked up, then the function of those 4 pins will work fine. It seems like the only reason you'd do what you're talking about is so you can tow a trailer meant to have brakes without actually having your truck wired to control the brakes which is not a good idea in my opinion.

You are correct but I rent trailers sometimes and most have a 7 way connector even though I don't use it. Not hauling anything real heavy, just very big.

So the trailers you are renting have a 7-pin connector and have brakes on the trailer and you want to only run the 4 pins that control the lights and tow the trailer without the brakes?

I'd just get a 7-pin and wire up all 7 pins correctly so you can safely tow the bigger trailers you're talking about.
