Whats up you guys just got my first toyota, its a 00 pre-runner 90000 miles automatic no mods at all. I cant go over about 10 mph without an oscillating noise coming from down below. I read this forum extensively and what it seemed like was either wheel bearings or a ujoint gone bad. I have checked these things and they seem fine.

The noise mirrors the trucks wheel speed and not engine rpm. I don't have aggressive tires and the truck begins to vibrate and shake at bout 50mph and gets worse and louder the faster you go.

Any troubleshooting tricks would be very helpful, thanks. Also when i started it up today i noticed that it sounded like. Big rig starting like a real bad exhaust leak but i looked and couldn't see any loose or rusted exhaust parts.

Wheel bearings can physically look and feel good and still be bad by making noise when driving. Some wheel bearings make noise and highway speeds and some will start roaring at parking lot speeds

Thanks guys but how the hell do i figure it out for sure, those things are pressed in and a pain in the ass id rather not just change them for the hell of it. Do you guys know of a way to check them other than the regular ways. Thanks again for the help.

To check yournwheelnbearings jack up he front of the truck off the ground and grab the top of the wheel and push it back and forth. Not rotate, but actually push it towards the engine and pull away. It should be tight no movement.

You had mentioned Acer, that the noise seems to come from below...i was wondering if you've checked your carrier bearing? they shake like crazy at highway speed especially if your driveshaft is off balance.

Lube the u-joints to see if it makes any difference. Its something that you should do anyway, as part of normal maintenance. Its likely very overdue.

Last year I bought a 99 prerunner. It is my first Tacoma and I love it! Anyway, I was having the same problem and I found a thread on here saying to try and grease up the 5 zerks along the drive shaft. I did that and the noise went away. Cost me about 5 bucks and maybe 15 minutes.
