Hi folks, nice to join you and quite an impressive site you have. I've been a member of another unrelated forum or two but have never been on one that covers it ALL. From the obvious toyota itself to mechanics and off roading, hunting, fishing and on and on. Pretty much a one stop shop. I look forward to checking it all out.

I'm a new and first time toyota owner, first foreign vehicle i've.... nope, an 89' mighty max, this toyota is my second japanese vehicle behind an impressive array of chevrolet trucks. The chevy's have all been fantastic, reliable high mileage vehicles but with gas prices sure to go up, i took advantage of what seemed like a great deal and bought my "new to me" 96' base model reg cab, 2.4 with the 5 speed from a neighbor for a few grand. The truck has 140k on it but is in 99% visual condition so i bought it without even a test drive.

I'm a plumber by trade and put 40k++ miles on my trucks every year. The gas prices hitting $4.00 a gallon last year, not to mention the fuel shortages, were my main reason i picked this little truck up, i was happy to see 28mpg on my first tankful. And that was with the a/c cranking. With some weight in the back i fully expect to see it decrease but still, its twice what i'm used to. This truck will hopefully pay for itself just in fuel savings.

As a guy used to the cab of full size vehicles, the little interior and go cart like ride is going to take some getting used to but i have to say i've actually been kind of... excited? to jump into it for a day of errands or estimates. Lighning fast steering and brakes, a sporty(to me)5 speed, complete simplicity in terms of design and function. Did i mention 28mpg?

Anyways...glad to be here, i'm sure the site will provide needed knowledge and entertainment both. Look forward to highlighting my next 100,000 toy powered miles here. See ya'll(N.C.) around! J

If you're really an MPG guru than I suggest you look into a scangauge. I can't tell you from personal experience but I'm sure someone can chime in or you could search it if you interested.

Scangauge huh? I'll have to check that out. I am a high mileage freak without the formal training. On my loaded down full size vehicles i'm limited to the 16 or so mpg i can get out of them. On my wife's chevy HHR, i've obtained a high of 44mpg on a 620mile trip. Thats my personal best. This toyota cashed in today at 29.2 and this is before i start doing the serious coasting procedures. A/C off will add a mile or two to the gallon too. Slick 50 adds a bit i think and i'm following Obamas advice and have inflkated my tires. Now i'm set, 35... here i come J

 

Short of the long scan gauge tells you your mpg in real time.
