Reset Mileage Before Indication Light?

Ok so here's my problem... I'm about 600 miles away from needing an oil change. Next week I have to make a ~1000 mile road trip. So I figured I'd change the oil before I go so that the truck is clean and good to go.

However the "Maintence Required" light isn't on yet since I'm 600ish miles away from the system activating that. So can I use the procedure to reset the light even though it's not on? And then it'll start counting to 5000 miles again? Or does the light HAVE to be on in order to reset the system?

 

Reset it when u do the oil change......it will zero out as usual and all will be good.
