I don't know what NC smog laws are but an after market Cat is a lot cheaper. Do a Google search for your truck or get one from a junk yard. I would assume one from a 1996 to 2004 would work for you.

Do you have a cali emissions model? I bought a new cat from rockauto recently and it works great

Had to replace mine last year, I would stay away from OEM parts as the price is WAY too steep. Aftermarket would save you a ton of cash...also, take your bad cat(s) to the scap metal dealer and see what a couple of them would offer you....don't just throw them out, (like I did when my parts were changed- damn it!).....you're leavin money on the table, if you let the shop "handle it". you probally can use any of the high flow cats. its nothing different then a cali model other then having the cali stamp and an extra 300 bucks to make your wallet lighter. i think i paid under 100 bucks for a magnaflow cat last year. passed the acutal smog test fine, but failed the visual test lol

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.

I have not gone through this with my truck, but I used to own a 2000 mustang gt, and in 2004 on top of all my other mods, before i put shorty headers on, I replaced the exhaust, the entire exhaust, with magnaflow, with the high flow cats, got it from american muscle, and they told me it would pass all emissions test, or money back, and it did for almost 6 years up here. never threw a code, back then the stang had semi duel, with 4 small cats, and replaced it with 2 high flows, and no problems. the first time I went for testing, this old fart really looked and poked but with a fresh tune my emission levels were square with factory new. I from Charlotte so I know all about the state inspections, remember we were the first in the state to have to do that back in 81.

and I am going to say again, keep these motors tuned. keep the plugs, wires, everything in good shape, by the time your o2 sensors throw a code you are not only wasting gas you are making your cats work, too much. I am not saying this will help in all cases, but I might go overboard on keeping a motor running at 100% but I have yet had a cat go bad. here is a pic again of my old 02 sensors I replaced last year and while never throwing a code they were god awful bad. and my truck for having 186,000 runs great, matter of fact before i got the flu i replaced the 3 coils last month, and she really runs sweet now, fired right up when it was 5 below last week, and I have picked up 2mpg, and idle is much smoother.

Not sure when CA changed the law on CATs but in 2003 I had to change the CAT on my chevy 4x4. The dealer said a factory CAT was $1200 but recommended a local muffler shop do it for $300. So I saved money and all was well. Now my son has the truck in CO.
