Motorcycle transport

I have an 07 shortbed. I want to move my bike around. I have a 05 GSXR 750 sportbike. I wanted to know if anyone knows if the bed can hold the bike in it, with the gate down. If not (or in addition) if anyone knows any good bike trailers that are relatively inexpensive.

 

My SV650s is about 80" long. I'm assuming that the GSX-R is +/- 3". It's also probably 370 lbs.

Half of the bike's weight (200lbs) should be ok on the tailgate, when going on track days. But I personally did not like that idea so I got the long bed.

A small trailer might be less than $100-. I would do this option. It would be easier to get the bike on and off , if you're alone.

This reminds me, I gotta sign up for track days. Hope I can keep what's left of the shiny side 'up' this year.

i would agree with topdeck you want full coverage and protection for your bike. i know because my honey is getting a hayabusa in the summer can't wait to ride it hehehehe speed baby oh and we need to transport it from tampa to orl. trailer, i rented one. but to purchase one my HOA would have a conniption with that.

 

I have wanted an SV650 for a long time. They are great bikes. I have also been looking at getting a FZ6. Unfortunately, riding a bike in Houston is like wearing a target.

I have this problem with my HOA (Home Owner's Association) as well. They won't allow a vehicle to stay in our driveway for more than a week without moving... Guess where my old Honda Accord is sitting. This is the reason I wanted a longbed - I don't need a trailer... yet.

Back on Subject: Reapergm - you should be able to fit it in the bed without a problem. However, I agree with topdec's issue with putting that much weight on the tailgate. Ldytaco05 has it right. The best thing to do (especially since you have a shortbed) is to rent or buy a trailer. Trust me, if you are going to use it 3 times in a year then it will pay for itself. Plus, if you get a small standard utility trailer, you can use it for much more than the bike.

 

I would buy a trailer to transport it. There have been a few reports on TN of people bending their tailgates from having the back tire of a bike on it.

 

I was about to ask the same question. I drive a ZX9-R and track days are coming up and was wondering if that would be to much wait.
I know what 007Tacoma means about driving around in Houston traffic with a motorcycle. But like 06TRDSport said I have heard of tailgates bending and didnt want to experience that personally. Well first I have to get my truck first. LOL. Hopefully tomorrow

 

it is a fact. but if you park your bike in an angle it would not have that pressure on your tailgate. of course you need more than one person to do this. i have seen it done.

 

I have seen photos on TN/TTORA of a GSX-R 600 on a standard bed, set at an angle, with the tailgate up.

If my calculations were correct, the hypotenus of a 60'x56' bed (shortbed) is 82". The bike should fit with the tailgate up, even on a shortbed, if it's at an angle. The issue now is where to hook the tie downs. I don't know if the rail system is strong enough to hold the bike with the forks pushed down.

 

I ordered a longbed for just this reason, but the dealer messed up and ordered the wrong truck. He got the shortbed instead. They cut me a deal, and b/c of time and need, I took it. But now its frustrating. Where can I get a good trailer. Thats another worry. Alot of them dont come cheap. I travel alot, so it has to withstand highway speeds for a long amount of time. Anyone know where to look?

 

Try Craigslist for a trailer. I've found some great deals through this media. One mans trash is another mans gold.

back on topic...when my buddy and i transport both of our bikes in his standard bed taco, the tailgate won't come up, but the tires are about 4 inches from actually being ON the tailgate. I think if you are only carrying one bike tho, even in a short bed, you can probably carry it diagonally in the bed and not have any weight on the tailgate, no? i have another friend who transports 2 bikes on a taco, and has a bed extender/ramp...he doesnt have any problems either... just some thoughts

 

No, I haven't checked that site out yet. I'm in MN. Don 't know what I'm going to do this year. While weight training, found out my left collar bone still hurts from a highside last year, and from other low sides, one of which was in Brainerd International Raceway (BIR).

Regarding the shortbed, I did post that it should fit. I just don't know where you'd hook the tie downs. I usually compress the front to really minimize possibility of the cables getting loose.
