I read somewhere that Toyota made their own oversized oil filter for the Tacoma, but I don't see it on the TRD website.

Oversized, supposedly being better for larger surface area for better flow and more filtration.

Is there such an oil filter to fit the Toy Taco 2008 V6?

It could be someone was refering to using the filter from the V6 which is larger in place of the filter for the I4.

Ask for the "D4" filter. The "D3" is the shorter one.:)

The filters I use 90915-YZZD3 are supposed to be oversized....?? They're actually Tundra filters (I think).
    For 1FZFE, 2UZFE and 1GRFE V8 engines
They're the same width but a little taller....atleast, taller than what was on it from the factory.

And it will screw perectly onto the thread of the 2008 Taco?

This will mean I'll have to add more oil, how much more do you think, 1/4 bottle?

    It's working on my 2007 4.0L.

I'm still trying to figure out the oil capacity. The dipstick on these trucks suck. My last oil change I put in the required 5.5qts and the dipstick was low. I added about another 1/2 quart.... that's as far as I went. I posted a thread on here (I think) and got atleast one other person to confirm they put in 6qts with an oversized filter (not the same filter). I'm not adding anymore regardless of what I think the dipstick says...6qts is enough. I'll probably check it in a few thousand miles to make sure. I think the dipstick is easier to read once there's some miles on the oil.

The first time I did the oil - I put in 5.5qts and left it there. After about 3,000 miles, I added 1/2qt to it cuz it was at the low line.

(I've only had 2 oil changes on the truck since I've owned it)

I just did my first oil change a few hundred miles ago and noticed the same thing; 5.5 quarts and it was still low. I didn't put in 6 qts but it was a good 5.75 qts. I'm using the YZZD3 filter if it makes any difference.

OK, thanks. I also read about the dipstick being bad. I will sand it with 800 grit tomorrow and clean really well to make the oil adhere and more readable. My old car used to have cross hatch makes built right into the end of the stick.

Let me know if that works....

I didn't have any problems with the oil on the dipstick at all. In fact, the oil was everywhere on the dipstick.

Me BAD. I had the numbers reversed in my head. Thanks guys for not ripping me on it, but I don't mind being corrected. The "D3" is the taller one.

Mine had a tall one on it from the factory and it looked a whole lot more engineered inside compared to the replacement. Anyone else notice that?

Believe it or not.... I did some googling earlier this week and there is a D4 filter that some of the other toyota vehicles use. Your post was perfectly legit.

I also found out (according to other folks online) that the D3 filters are made in Thailand and are inferior to its older counterpart that Toyota stopped making. Go figure...

I just ordered a case of the original type oil filters that come on our trucks. These filters are made in Japan and are part number 90915-20004. The dealership tells you they are not avalable but they are. I ordered mine from American Toyota in Albuquerque, NM. Phone number is 505-823-4440. Ask for Jim. You can get them cheaper if you order them by the case. They are what came on our trucks from the factory and are superior than the replacement filter style.
These filters are very hard to find in the US so just give American Toyota a call in Albuquerque.

I used a Fram XtraGuard filter on my first oil change last night, part number PH3614, it was way shorter than the stock filter which is why I'm here searching threads on the oil filter. I about never got that factory filter off, first the filter wrench stripped the top, then my pipe wrench twisted it...I had to shove a philips screwdriver through it to turn it, damn was it on there!

I'll have to order a supply of the big ones from Toyo. Also switched to Mobil-1 Full synthetic and put in a K&N air filter to see if mileage improves at all.

I changed mine today and the filter the Toyota parts dept. gave me was Toyota #90915-YZZG1. This one was the same diameter and thread but was about .75" shorter than the original one I removed. I also installed the Fumoto valve on the oil pan at this time. I did a full warm up leakage test and it was good. This appears to be the same filters I used on my '99. This replacement is also the same size as a Purolator #L10241 that I bought after reading some reviews. I got 4 of these Toyota filters for $3 a peice. It took 5.5 Qt to top it off.
Anybody see anything bad happening using these up as far as actual filtering?

Here is what I just took off , black stock one from factory, and then the new white TRD one. The TRD one is taller and wider.
