So i had taken off all of the mud flaps on my truck because i thought they were a little cheesy and just not to my liking. Well, I just recently did a major detailing of the truck and found a good amount of chips in the back bumper from the stones, does anyone else have this issue?

If so is there any other way of avoiding it without putting a metal bumper on or the flaps back on?

You can get shorter, yet still stock looking mud flaps. Husky makes them.

You can coat the underside of the bumper in undercoating, or have it LineX'd.

Give it a good cleaning and apply clear vinyl to protect the paint.

...and are you talking about the bumper or the side panels on the bed itself? The bumper IS metal... ;)

My brother lived in Flag for many years, and IIRC, the non-paved roads around Flag are not much different from our non-paved roads around here--FULL OF ROCKS!

So now you know one reason your Taco came with flaps: to keep the rocks from chipping the paint along the sides of the truck. The real basic decision is easy: Do you want flaps or chips? Pick one.

I just replaced the original stock flaps on our '06. The inside of all four flaps was all chewed up by our local rocks. The flaps did the job they were designed to do--keep the rocks off the paint. Rather than pay an outrageous price for new Toyota flaps, I bought & installed new Weathertech flaps. Mounted up perfectly using the stock hardware, made from a similar material, about 1.5" shorter than stock and only cost $80 shipped direct from Weathertech. I think they look better than the stock ones too, and they don't have "4x4" on the rears.

That's a really nice alternative! I wouldn't mind smaller and non "4x4" flaps. But I also have a guy who said he will buff out my chips and line them with the plastic/rubber chip guard. If that doesn't work ill invest in flaps
