Alright so I noticed a whistling noise coming from my engine so I took my truck into the dealership to get it checked out. Turns out, my alternator is on its way out. The dealership quoted me a ridiculous $800 to replace the alternator. I plan on replacing the alternator myself I just had a few questions...

    1. My truck doesn't have the tow package but would it be bad if I installed the bigger 130 amp alternator in my truck? (I've got some KC lights and sound system)

    2. An alternator from the dealer is about $400 vs Autozone's $150 lifetime alternator. Has anyone had any experience with an Autozone alternator?

Lastly, I'll gladly take any help or tips with this replacement! Maybe if theres a mod day coming up soon I can get a chance to meet some of you guys and get some pointers.

subbed.........I have never had an autozone/kragen reman last more than 3yrs on other vehicles....That said, Im curious to see the opinions on these trucks.

lifetime kragen/autozone is nice............but pointless if they are sub par.

I used to work for autozone and I've used their alternators a lot in the past. They are hit or miss on how long they last, but as said above expect around 3-4 years typically.

A bigger alternator would be ideal if you are running lights and a stereo. I would suggest looking around for one on the interwebz. While you are at it upgrade your "big 3" you amperage will be higher, your lights will be brighter, and your stereo will be louder!
