Bed Camping (Double Cab, Short Bed) Questions ...

I would like to keep it under $300 LOL

 

I go to the track about 10 times a year, plus other times we go camping just to camp.

I don’t load dirt very often, but it is a truck and I would like the ability to use it as such whenever.

I might end up doing the 2" Styrofoam for the sides, but I want to get everyone’s ideas before committing to something.

Another idea is to get something like a bed buddy instead of that chock. The bed buddy system doesn't mount to the floor of the bed and allows you to shove the bike all the way to one side rather than smack in the middle and still give you a secure place to tie it in place. That chock that you have really limits you, there are much better ways to haul a bike and maintain the usefulness of your bed.

 

Using something to make a temp floor will be well under $300.

it a heavy Yamaha R1 sportbike so in the middle is idea for weight distro.

Plus it takes up a good amount of room (I have about 10" on each side of the bike that gets filled up with gas cans, ramp, cooler, wheel stands, canopy......

Plus the wheel chock is perm. It has 3 x 1/2" thick steel plates under the bed its attached to.

Plus the photo only shows the part of the wheel chock when its not being used. It has 2 parts that the wheel sits in and it holds the bike in one place

 

Just take the wheel chock out and problem solved! Push the bike to the front and strap it down, no need for a chock. I've had my bikes many times in the back of the truck and never used a chock.

 

The chock is perm now.

 

Gettin the troll vibe. Bedmat? Blanket? Platform? styrofoam? Spot padding? Helluva problem.. Short bed dirt hauler/motorcycle caddy/sleep platform that must be everything and do anything with no effort to configure? Daydreaming..

 

Use the foam tubing recommended above and cover it with the moving blanket with the two layers of protection that should work fine.

If serious OP, I agree with others. There is no going to be a one size fits all solution for all your needs given the variety of tasks. GL!

 

I understand what you have, but the R1 is not a heavy bike at all. Wet weight is only about 450ish. An R1 track bike should be even lighter. What you do is shift the bike over to the driver's side and that frees up bed space on the passenger side to fit your gear, fuel cans, etc. That would eliminate all of the problems you're trying to solve because the chock wouldn't be on the floor of the bed and you'd still have a secure tie down at the front of the bed with the bed buddy system. Just trying to give you a way to think outside the box err... chock

Otherwise, the platform built to the height of the chock base is probably your cheapest and best bet if you're set on keeping the chock system.

 

I'm leaning towards doing the small 2" platform idea (of 2" Styrofoam) sections to lay down when I go camping.... I’m still trying to get other ideas before I figure out my next step.

But because the wheel chock is now a perm part of the bed, bolted and welded to steel plates placed under the bed and above the gas tank, the wheel chock has to stay.

 

After giving it some though the past 2 days, I am now leaning towards a platform on the shelve grooves. The only problem I see with that is me being 6'3" it would take away some needed headroom when I sit up in the tent. Not to mention getting up in the bed (with the added height of the platform and air mattress) to begin with because I would have to make the platform use the whole tail bed including the gate when its down so I can fit in my short bed.

 

Build a covered drawer in the end of the platform that you can just pull out come nap time. Self contained and an easy way to get to the stuff you're storing underneath there.

 

Simplicity is key because I still have to carry it around with the bike and everything else in the bed. So I dont think I will have all that if I go that route.
