Use vinyl dye and it'll be permanently black (you can choose flat or gloss)

I've done the heat gun, I've done the back to black, I've done the magic erasers (holy crap that's me at the end of page 1!)

This dye is a permanent solution. I think it's the same exact stuff as the bumper/trim paint.

edit: nvm it's an old thread

Yeah, on my interior vinyl pieces it literally dyed them. Permanent.

I sprayed a tiny spot on my lower valence (rubber/vinyl material) and it to absorbed the dye. It's permanent.

Just waiting to take it all off and do it right. It's going to make it look sick.

Check out TacoMX's valence. Pretty sure he dyed his too

edit: here it is (before he replaced it) http://www.tacomaworld.com/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_10883.JPG

I started with the Magic Eraser and had good even results but took way too long. Tried a blow torch and that is way faster but the result is no where near as even as the eraser. Heat gun was slower than torch and harder to achieve a steady finish.

I came to a realization all these methods are producing their results through heat; just one is faster than the other. I'm sure some of you may think there is "magic" in the Magic Eraser, but there isn't. Your are simply rubbing it repeatedly and producing a small amount of heat that is enough to produce a melting affect just like the torch or heat gun. You'll likely get the same results using a sponge if you want to save even more money.

So I combined the speed of the torch with the eraser. While the flare was still warm, not hot, I finished it off with the magic eraser to get a more even finish. Probably took me less than 15 minutes after I figured this out to do the remaining 3 flares. If you angle the torch so that it is almost parallel to the surface you'll get a better end result. It "melts" the material closest to the spout while pre-heating the material farthest away at the tip of the flame and you wind up with less spotty areas (dark vs lighter patches). Bottom line is to just go over it with the magic eraser and it will even the finish out.

    Thanks for the awesome posts.
